On the way to an early golf tee-off in Surrey on Sunday, I gave it the full Kimi Raikkonen around a rather wide roundabout on a 60mph stretch of road. Decent (and somewhat surprising) oversteer, I was really congratulating myself on my rally driving. Unfortunately, at the exit of the roundabout Mr Plod who was parked on the left pulled me over for a quiet word.

As he walked over, I gave him my best effort at a smile and tried to preempt things by offering: "I think I might have hit oil". He gave me a huge grin and said "No - I think you were d**king around!". Luckily he seemed in good humour and he knew me from bringing patients into my work. I was sent on my way after a friendly chat about cars and the usual warning to "save it for the race track".

I was a bit more subdued from then on and followed it with a dismal round of golf. Still - while I wasn't technically speeding or breaking the law, I might have been rather lucky.

In my experience it's best just to say very little, be polite and take evrything they say to you as gospel and promise to play nice from then on. As long as you don't piss them off you're ok.

i think you were bl**dy lucky they didn't do you for dangerous driving or something! it's so annoying when all you want to do is have some fun and hoon about but you've always gotta keep one eye out for Mr Plod. Twice i've pulled into a massive car park near us late at night to have a play, and out of the corner of my eye i've seen a car on the road nearby, i've parked up instead of playing and in has driven a cop car to have a look... phew!
