Hi

I have bought a car that is currently un-taxed (registered as off the road) – the present owners can not get it taxed before I collect it so am I aloud to drive it home (2hours away).

Someone at work said that as the new owner I could drive it on one journey as I am transporting it – any thoughts?

Go and tax the car in a post office local to where the car is?

I cant as the present owner doesnt have the MOT certificate - the car is legal though as it needs its MOT doing next month and it was last taxed 6 months ago.

If it were me, I wouldn't! Not only is it declared SORN 6 months ago, you haven't got the MOT certificate in your possession and it's not yet in your name either!!! If you had a short journey to get it home, then you could chance it, but 2 hours away ... Why hasn't the present keeper got the MOT cert?

I smell something fishy here - and it's not the contents of my girlfriends apple crumble!
Seriously though I wouldn't buy it without a copy of the MOT certificate - they should have this.

book it in somewhere for an MOT take it there when it fails you are alowed to drive the car home I belive...

Have you got insurance in your name on the vehicle?

This might be better posted in Speeding Plod and the Law forum as there are a few more knowledgable people on there.

Call DVLA and I'm sure they'll be able to sort you something out. Don't risk it. Driving without it will risk a fine and could invalidate your insurance (I think).

your grandad had an elise????

how cool is that?!

get the garage that MOT'd the car to issue a copy of the MOT - will cost £10.

or - you can tax the car online - you don't need the MOT or insurance details as the car is known to them anyway and the will already know if it's insured and mot'd. then once you've got the tax sorted get onto your insurance company and get it insured in your name - sorted. you just need the VIN number for the car.

worst thing you'll get done for is failurt to display the tax disc and that's normally jsut forgotten about when they discover that it's taxed anyway.

As above really, you cannot drive it on the road legally. If it is uninsured/untaxed you can be looking at a 1k fine for each offence.

Best bet is to get it MOT'd at the nearest MOT station to it now, or as said get the copy of the MOT from the garage. You can tax it before you collect it (there is a form which says you bought the car but don't have it registered in your name yet) then it will be taxed and Mot'd and you can insure it, and be plod free...

Failing that, pay a car transporter to take it to your house (cheaper than you may think) and then sort out the MOT/Tax/Insurance etc.. when it is at your home.

My understanding is that you can drive your car to an MOT station for a test if it is booked in advance. I think you can also drive it home if it fails.

Since you need an MOT to get a tax disk, I'm guessing you'd be ok.

Of course if you get nicked and given the rubber glove treatment - ignore the above advise.
