MK2 SPORTS EXHAUST
Discussion
Just wandering which was the best sports exhaust for a mk2.
Define 'best'?
Do you want the:
- loudest
- lightest
- highest quality
- etc.. etc..
As long as you get a stainless steel one (most are) then it's hard to go wrong.
It depends a lot on your own preference what you like or not. An exhaust which is great for someone may be too loud or droning inside the cabin for another if he does a lot of M-way miles.
As a rule of thumb it's often the case that a bigger silencer also gives a bigger noise reduction (if the internal construction is similar)
Bye, Arno.
I'd agree with the comments re: personal preference. I bought a Janspeed for my S2 and have just sold it on after 1 month of running. It's just too loud for me in the critical 3000-4000 rpm range ... the rumble on startup and popping was great though! Loads of other people seem to love them so I must be in the minority!
For the time being I'm back on the standard system which works suprisingly well with the ITG induction kit.
From what I can gather the Lotus Magnex system seems very similar to the Janspeed. Not sure about the Brooke Kensington system although from the pictures it looks very similar to the Janspeed.
Long term I'm thinking of getting the Bell & Colville system as most people seems to think that is more 'refined' than the Janspeed. It also has two seperate back boxes so maybe that helps keep things more civilised?
Anyone know about the Tubi style system that was supposed to be available by now?

I have one on my car. Like it a lot. Does cost quite bit more than the others though.. www.scuderiasystems.com sells them.
I did a little install-document here: Tubi install on Elise S2
Size-wise and from an external construction viewpoint it's identical to the standard exhaust and pretty well silenced.
Not a good choice if you are looking for a significantly lighter (weight) exhaust as it's a pretty solid construction and comes in close to the original weight.
A little more noise in the cabin, but not that much. Exhaust tone is very low. Little or no high pitched frequencies.
Hadly noticable when cruising on the M-way, but boot it up to the rev limiter and it has a nice sound to it. Tunnels make it sound very nice
Like all sports exhausts on the Elise it makes little or no HP difference, but does make it rev a little more freely.

Out of curiosity - how much was the tubi? I just want some sort of reference point in case there is a tubi made for the US Elise when it is finally here.
Thanks
For all those who are looking for an exhaust replacement for the s2 elise, perhaps it's good to know that there is another producer of exhaust in belgium who has already made exhaust for elise s1 and s2. You can find it on www.proinox.be . The exhaust is sold by the belgian lotus dealer ALVAN. I had the opportunity to have a look at the build quality and that was all right. The weldings are of good quality and properly cleaned. Sadly i have no idea how it sounds, but according to the dealer it gives a deep sound and is not to loud. Currently they are working on the fixings to eliminate some disturbing vibrations.
price is around 1000 €uro's

I think you'll look at a retail price of something between USD $1200 to $1500. Pretty much the 'default' Tubi price for all their exhaust systems, irrespective of car type.
Much, much more expensive (could be argued that it's too expensive) than the other exhausts (about 2 to 3 times) for the Elise. But I guess they don't care as this is just a 'sideline' bext to their biggest sellers in the Ferrari and Lambo market.
Bye, Arno.
