I just phoned my local lotus dealer to get a quote for an a sevice which is due soon £360, UMMM i am not going to pay that.

So i phoned up the place where the car was originally bought from henley TVR and they gave me a price saving £165

What service is it due JU? That does seem a lot of dosh.
To give you some comparison my Lotus dealer is: A service £195, B servce £295, C service £495. (This is for a standard S2 Elise).

If you don't mind the drive you could do a lot worse than go to Steve Williams:
www.swlotus.com/

Doubt you will find anybody that has a bad word for him both in terms of service and price

Why not service it yourself?

A standard service on my VX is £20, following the service schedule to the letter and then checking anything else which could possibly be checked which isn't even in the schedule.

DIY is a money saving in the short term, but what you save on the servicing you *may* lose though long term on resale - regardless of how good a mechanic you might be if there isn't a stack of receipts and stamps in the service book people just aren't going to spare with their cash for a car that in many peoples eyes will not have been serviced

I have original VX service schedule sheets, photographs of everything that has been done and a huge stack of reciepts. To be honest no one looks for a service history as a major reason for buying a particular car.

I am also servicing it every 6 months rather than every 12. There are also no major services for the VX, the only changes are oil and oil filter, and brake fluid every 3 years.

I reckon 95% of people looking to buy used Elises look gor a good service history..some people are even put off if they are not all dealer stamps, but Specialists.

If buying a car with no history, what have you got other than the owners word, that it has actually been serviced?...most people wouldnt even get past the 1st phone call with no history and at best would want like a grand or so knocking off for lack of history IMO

Service history is pretty much the number 1 thing for most folks buying a sports car like an elise or VX.

Nothing wrong with doing your own oil canges more often but not getting those stamps will cost you.

That quote was for an A service but i have since spoke to henley TVR where the car was originally bought from and they quoted me £195 and its not too far away really seeing as i am in swindon.

I am more than capable of doing a service myself i have also fitted alot of stuff to my car myself i see myself as a reasonable DIY mechanic but i do need the stamp in the book wgich i could get but thats not right.

My local Lotus dealer (from where I purchased my 111r) charged me £330 for my "A" service. I have to say it initially seemed a bit steep to me for fluids, filter, and kicking the tyres, but I suppose it comes with the territory of owning cars such as ours. I'm used to doing all the work on my classic MG myself, with modest parts costs!

I too am somewhat apprehensive of going elsewhere for service. I don't expect the indies have seen that many 111r's yet, and I also would have thought that a full dealer service history would help the resale value.
