Hi all,

I'm off to look at a S1 Elise, reg J13 DAT, at the weekend. Apparently the car was owned by LAD Motorsport and has their engine and close ratio gearbox in it. No paperwork to vouch for this and little in the form of servcie history. The engine has their stamp / decals on it. Also, it used to be registered in their business name as on a copy of an old V5.

Whilst not a deal breaker, I'd like to know more. LAD motorsports (according to google) no longer exist. does anyone have any dealings with them? Good upgraded engines?

Did anyone on here own the car or know the old owner? Current owner has only had it 3 months but selling on now due to loss of storage.

Thanks in advance.

Hi bud.

Sorry you didn’t get the reply you were after. I came across your thread as I did a google search about this car, trying to find out more.

Out of interest did you go to see it? What did you think?

Hi Dan, nothing as yet due to the petrol situation.....

Seems the car was owned by LAD motorsport past 20 years but pretty much hasn't turned a wheel in that time, other for the MOT every year and occasional service. Current owner hasn't had it a few months and now selling on. Not writing the car off, but need to go on with my eyes open. Had a quick chat with someone on Facebook who said he knew the car, recommended I get an inspection done, other than that, no other info available on it it would seem.

Evo magazine did a group test of tuned S1 Elises, back in the day, L.A.D. being one of them.

You can read it HERE (scroll down to February 1999).

Did anyone go and see or buy this Elise?

I noticed it came up for sale with Jon Seal Sportscars, priced I think at £17500 a few weeks ago
It's now appeared on Ebay for £13995

I can't find any history on it, apart from some very old forum posts where the picture links are dead, saying it had had an accident, while being use as a demo car for LAD Motorsport.

I like the colour scheme, but it's a long way to go, if it is a total dog. The fact it's had 2 owners in short period and both have got rid is also ringing alarm bells.

Any help appreciated or if anyone has a nice early S1 for sale, let me know

I was also tentatively looking at this car, as I quite fancy a Lotus Elise Series 1 and this looked a clean, good example. After finding the previous 'for sale' post, I reached out to Jon at Jon Seal Sportscars who informed me they removed the listing and declined to sell it for the owner after finding front chassis damage.

With that in mind, I'd like to praise Jon Seal Sportscars for their honesty and putting customer care above profit.

Interesting, thanks! I guess it's lucky they hadn't purchased the car, it must have been on sale or return basis as you say. It's a shame they didn't inspect it fully before advertising, but I guess that happens. Even professionals get caught out, it's how you deal with it that counts.

Annoying now that the seller hasn't disclosed this chassis damage on his Ebay advert, as he must know about it now!

Of course as a private seller he doesn't have to disclose it

I see this has now been sold to the USA, lots of bragging going on by the owner on Facebook. I guess that was the best option for it.

I wonder if the new owner over there will find this thread in the future??

Nice little website that.

The comments from the tuners were amusing. I agree with them. Basing the test on in-gear times was dumb given the nature of the cars.
