Insurance on 2nd car... Any recommendations?
Discussion
I've just purchased a nice Nissan Primera 2.0 N plate! It sure is a looker with its cobwebs and bird crap from the last 6 months standing idle! Anyway, just telephoned NU for a quote on a second car and was astounded by the amount they wanted for a £600 (at best) car. Does anybody have any recommendations for insurers that wouldn't be so harsh?
I bought it for the long M11 / M25 / M4 trips I'm frequently subjected to which really take the edge of the Elise's enjoyment factor in my opinion.

If it's just a 'mileage workhorse' then register it in your other half's name, and drive it with Third-Party cover on your Elsie's insurance!
Lots of insurance policies allow you to drive *someone else's* car with Third-Party cover, so if you're involved in an own-fault accident the other driver will get his car repaired by your Elsie's Insurance Company and you won't get done for having no insurance on the Nissan...
***EDIT Just had a thought, the Nissan may be legally required to have an insurance policy specifically covering it anyways.... hhmmm, worth looking into or at very least take out third party insurance cover for it? EDIT****
Now might be a good time for an intro from myself LOL
I've been lurking for a couple of weeks now... my current car's a 1.7 Ford Puma, but I've always lusted after Lotus Elises (especially S2)
Now 2nd hand prices are coming down a bit I've seriously tempted to treat myself
But car insurance in Northern Ireland where I live in UNBELIEVABLY expensive (I'm 29 and the best quote is on the wrong side of £1500 )
I've messed around on the elephant.com website and when I enter various English Post-Codes instead of my Northern Ireland one, the quote comes down to around £700!! GGRRRRR
Cheers,
J.B.

yeah - when you go to tax it, you will find you have to have a policy covering the car iteself, with your name on it - I tried to get around it like you mention above - register the 2nd car in partners name etc...dosent work Im afraid
its really pants trying to insure mulitple vehicles...I mean you have to build up NCB on each one seperately...but if you have a prang it affects all them FFS !...and you can only drive one car at a time anyway.....surely there must be a better way - anyone know how many cars you have to own before you can get 'fleet' insurance? is it like 5 or more?

Try Liverpool Victoria they have a very good 2 car policy. I have it and it cost me £700 for a 111R and a Diesel Zafira
I'm with LV, and they said for my 2nd car they would just give zero NCB, no different to if it was my only car and was coming to them with no driving history. Very unhelpful, they didn't want to know. Went elsewhere.
See what Admiral will do. They are not so bad at the minute.
You should also have a bump around the usual websites (admiral, tesco, direct line, esure, etc) and check out and see if any are offering a 'full introductory discount' for ex company car drivers. Normally you can get that same offer on your second car (saying you have full NCD on your main car) by phoning them and badgering the sales person a little.
Probably best to avoid web quotes on something like that as someone on the phone can be a little less 'black and white' about your particular case.

No you can't do this I'm afraid. The car needs to have some insurance on it for you to use it in this way. It will be flagged by ANPR units as having no insurance and you'll probably be stopped before too long.
I insure my Elise and MX-5 with AON. They do a mirrored NCB on the Mazda as I'm using my full 6 years discount on the Elise. I pay £1100 to insure both cars on an unlimited mileage basis.

same here - they wanted 2x as much to insure my 6 year old Volvo S80 as they do for my 300bhp Elise !
