A friend of mine is looking to purchase an early S2 with around 60k miles on the clock. The one thing he wondered about is the condition of the shocks / suspension - I wonder on average when an Elise requires a bit of a refresh? Any thoughts appreciated... Bits.

generally by 60K miles you will need new shocks etc, think you will be pushed to find many Elises that have done that many miles though !

Like bogie notes, something with that many miles should have probably gone through shocks, disks/pads, maybe an exhaust, 2 or 3 sets of tyres with that mileage (even mainly motorway I guess) and maybe a front end respray to tidy stone chips(?).

However, if it's got lots of history and is in good nick, it might be a mega-bargain.

Get it checked by a specialist for peace of mind and to know what needs doing. Also check out cars with less miles to see how it compares to them and guauge price accordingly.

Or get a decent S1 with less miles for around the same price.
