Be careful,
Lots of ridiculously high priced cars and everyone is jumping on the bandwagon!
New Elises aren’t selling! Fact! Why? They are 10k - 15k overpriced! Government luxury car tax is killing the Elise, let’s face it it’s a 30k - 35k car not 40k - 50k.
People have been arguing with me but the proof is in the pudding! Elises used to sell like hot cakes now less than 100 a year in the UK.
Lotus survived selling only Elises for a good few years now this.....
LOTUS STOP!
Boggy

My suggestion within budget would be a short tail later model 120bhp k series in exceptional condition. Whilst it's lacking the power of others, it doesn't matter, enjoy working the linear power hard. Ignore the HGF haters, if it hasn't been sorted already, it'll happen once, easy fix, and never happen again.
Later models have some basic luxuries like central locking, electric windows, air con, and generally nicer interiors and build quality.

Yes they've certainly sky rocketed in the last few years compared to what I sold mine for 3 years ago, well sorted cars seldom become available certainly in my 12 month search, but definitely not going to pay over the odds, I'm pretty open on series, engine etc but got the cash for a keeper.
There are plenty of good basic S1 examples with 50-70k miles for around £15k. Get the lowest mileage, best service history S1 (preferable) with MMC brakes for £15k. Drive it for a year, get to know what needs doing then refresh the suspension with Nitron then get the DVA 160 upgrade. I would steer clear of cars that have already been upgraded as some run rich for years and the engine will need rebuilding. Buy a good basic car and upgrade it as and when to your own personal spec and make it yours. 160bhp is the sweet spot in an Elise. They have gone up a bit lately but that is irrelevant these are still under-priced cars and have some way to go before they peak.
