Afternoon..

Looking into engine options for an S1 Elise, primarily a track car with a few road miles thrown in.

Will an S2 190bhp Toyota engine fit in without massive modifications?

Would be interested if anyone's done this and what sort of cost was involved.

Also, is this a good route to go down, or would the Honda engine be way better for little additional cost?

Cheers thumbup

I've seen photos of it done, but I don't think it is an easy job. The engine bay is larger on the S2 Toyota cars.

Fitting a Honda is a lot more common and there are kits and turn-key installations available.

Honda aside, I would have thought modifying the k to a good hp and increasing the reliability at the same time would be cheaper than a Toyota build, maybe even a Honda build if you get the right engine in the car in the first place.

Why trash an S1 when you just buy a Toyota powered S2 anyway? If you want lighter probably cheaper and easier to remove airbags, abs etc than to do an engine swap?

Easier, but of dubious legality and it'd still weigh more than an S1.

I can see little reason to pick the Toyota unit over a Honda though.

Most of the weight difference is in the engine and gearbox so I wouldn’t get too hungup on that.

Was looking into options as we had a fluid leak, but having thoroughly checked Into it, the leak was coolant from the water pump which has been replaced.

Long term, thinking about more power and having driven an S2 111R was impressed with the engine.

Our little car is great fun with the standard lump and surprisingly torquey....however on long straights it does struggle a bit...

Would love to get something with 180-190 bhp installed, hence the question re the Toyota lump.

Thanks for the replies, any other suggestions welcome..thumbup

Rear sub-frame is a lot bigger and heavier on the Toyota cars too, it makes the engine bay larger to accommodate the Toyota engine and box.

Try and have a go in a good n/a Honda S1, it’s in another league to the Toyota powertrain (I’ve had 2 Toyota powered S2 Elises, a K series S1 and now a Honda S1)
