Finding out the truth...

How do i find out if someone that says they have an Elise is most likely lying?
There is a certain person at another place that talks so much about other cars and then talks about owning an Elise that he paid $1,500 for to move up on the waiting list.
I know the other alternative is to ask for pics, but i would like to find out if there is another way to prove that he doesnt own such a car.

...and not all owners would know the 'trivia' about the car if asked anyway
Although they might not know all of the trivia, they should know about the day to day running/operating.
Try to catch him out. If you have one yourself, you can say something like "oh, how do you get to the (dipstick/washer refill/boot release) when the (whatever) is right over the top of it" ... or something. You get the idea. If you have made it up and he agrees (i.e. if there is no boot release), then you know he doesn't have one.
or just let him get on with it, and don't worry yourself about it
A lot of people, especially in the US buy cars for use as a status symbol.
Recently, there was some low level reprobate from the Rap industry showing us his Carrera GT on the telly.
He proudly informs us that it has a V10, pointing to the nose of the car.
The real owner of an Elise will be able to tell you about specific problems that just about every specimen has been afflicted with.
In the US, people are still paying above MSRP, still putting down deposits, despite that fact that there are available cars and quite a few cars now put on the market by so-called diehard Elise fans.
