Stumbled past a BMW showroom in the city today, checked out the Alpina roadster - Have to say it was pretty cool. They are around £38k new. Whilst I love my 111R I was sort of tempted to either trade in the 111R, get myself an Alpina as a "every day" car and then spend a bit more cash on a S1 to play with on track. At a squeeze I could get the Alpina and keep the 111R but that would not really make a lot of sense.

On the other hand I need someone to kick my head in and say WTF are you thinking about buying a BMW for let alone trading in the 111R!

Thats a good idea lets all trade in the excellent 111R for an over rated, crap suspension and slow car...

Doug... are you deluded?

(Do I need to kick harder, I have the odd Dan grade if you need another kicking!)

I test drove a Z4 before I ordered my 111r. It's a cheap and nasty car, particularly the interior - obviously built to a tight budget with horrid plastic and fake aluminium everywhere. Plus it's underpowered, has an unbelievably harsh ride, poor handling and costs a packet once you get a decent spec on it. Furthermore, it's a BMW.

This is not the car you're looking for.
You can go about your business in your Elise.
Move along to your Lotus dealer to hassle them about the 111r supercharger kit.

Have you lost your head entirely? You'll look like a total hairdressing poof in a Z4. Read the Evo review and then ask yourself again... "Do I want people to think I wax my chest and legs?"

If you really want a track hack and something more sensible then spend 15k on a decent S1 S160 and the rest of your cash on a used Skyline GT-R34 or a used M5 or 3 series Alpina.

People who know their cars will laugh at you openly in the street if you buy that.

P.S. I'm based at Liverpool St. if you need someone to knock 7-shades of sense into you tomorrow lunchtime.

I think he was talking about the Z5 not Z4. The Z5 is a lot better that the Z4 but still, not on the same level as a Lotus!
Step away from that BMW!

I quite like the z4 alpina. Bit silly to have that and an Elise. If you were to get one, the Elise might not be the most sensible choice of track car either...

Not sure I'd risk a z4 aplina new though. Better to get one as a second hand bargain imho!

Classic!!

Having read this and all of your other replies I now see sense. I think this was just the kicking I needed - I mean WTF was I thinking. Guess the BMW sales guy did a number on me yesterday. Just to clear things up though it was the Z4 Alpina Roadster I was looking at - 3.4 litre 300 bhp version with different suspension and aerodynamics etc to the standard Z4 - there is no way on earth I would have been fooled into thinking any of the standard Z4's would be worth trading in the elise for.

Thanks for the kicking - feel free to kick a bit more and further laugh at my near foolishness if necessary.

Doug do you mean the Z8 Alpina which was featured on Top Gear?

If so you will join other cool owners like... err....

Ronan Keating!

Have a cold shower than go out for a long drive in the 111R and realise how foolish you have been.

Yes and for the love of god and all that is holy, FFS get a decent exhaust on the thing. Having seen Boggy's at the weekend I really have developed a big big problem with the peashooter on the 111R. How could they give such a fantastic car such a puny, pathetic can?

Morning Everybody,

Doug I've owned 6 Bmw's all different variant's, a E30 318I, E36 318I, E36 325I Coupe, E36 328I Convertible, E36 325I SE, E36 328I Coupe Sport. They are all fine car's (Made) they are not fast, they do not handle, they are overrated. Most of people that drive Bmw's are not the sort of people I'd want to mix with. Time for a little story, I was in Dartford park with a mate of mine and my Son Luis, we were walking out of the park towards my car at the time (18 month old 328i Bmw Convertible) there was this guy standing next to a really nice Bmw 318i SE, both my and my mate Paul were dressed in short's and trainer's it was a very hot day, we stopped to look at his Car as it was quite a nice Blue colour as we were standing there he turned to us and in an aggressive manner said and I quote "bet you'd like to nick this wouldn't you" I looked at my mate Paul after picking myself up from the floor (Laughing) clicked my remote control alarm and to this Pra*'s amazement drove off in my car, why on earth do they rate there selves so much ? I've driven M3's Z3's Z4's and a M5 I wouldn't own another Bmw even if someone wanted to give it to me, don't do it !

One step in front here - when they fixed up the elise after my little slip down in southampton last December they suggested they fit the level 2 instead of the standard exhaust - consequently the insurance company picked up the cost of the upgrade

Next thing is to get myself an induction kit - not to mention a bit of driver training which I still need to book. For the moment i'll keep the hard driving to Grand Turismo 4.
