Lotus 2-Eleven purchase - registration number L18 DEJ
Discussion
Hi, I've just put a deposit down on a Lotus 2-Eleven, registration number L18 DEJ, and was wondering whether anybody knows anything about it's history. It is a 1 owner car with very low mileage so has presumably been used predominantly (if not entirely) on track.
Thank you in advance,
Danny.

No it isn't my first Lotus. I've previously owned an Esprit Turbo SE Highwing, have just sold an Elise 111R and still own a 340R which I've had for the last 3 years. I'm not quite sure what I'm going to do with the 2-eleven at the moment. I quite liked the idea of just owning one and as soon as one came up I snapped it up. Maybe I'll just have to learn how to drive properly so that I can do it some justice 🙂.

I have been unable to find the build number out as the car is not fitted with a build placque. Instead of having the usual bare aluminium dash it has a type of cloth material covering it. The dealer that I am buying the vehicle from has made some inquiries with the supplying dealer (Murray Lotus) and they said that the cloth was an optional extra and that the placque is not always fitted. I was already aware that some cars do not have build placques fitted but as far as I know all of the launch specification models, of which this is one, would normally have them fitted. Of course it wouldn't be possible to stick the placque on top of the cloth but I was wondering whether anybody else has heard of this 'optional extra'. The chassis number is SCCNA12348HF21839 if that would help anybody be able to let me know anything about the car's history.
Thanks again,
Danny.

I don't know what the original registration number was, but the number that is on it now has been on it since early 2009 according to the supplying dealer (Murray Lotus). Unusually the car has what looks like fitted carpets rather than floor mats. The car is outstanding 3 recalls, one of which dates from early 2009. The owner is in his late 70s and appears to have tailored the car to his own taste. Note also the lack of side decals which were a no cost option to have deleted but the vast majority have them fitted.

Hi Danny,
Looks a lovely car. Build plaques were fitted up to number 300 only, but 358 were made. Yours should have had a plaque unless it was specifically requested as a delete option. I suspect it was removed when the fabric was fitted to the bulkhead. The fabric wasn't a Lotus option.
For about £40 Lotus will send you a letter of provenance for the car once you have the v5, it's a nice touch that tells you when the car was built, how many were bobcat orange, and any options. It may even have something about the mystery bulkhead if that was a special factory order.

I thought there were only 2 recalls on the 2-11, mine has had the oil cooler hoses and some needed a check of rear hub bolt torques (like the Elise etc.).
You can find recall info etc from Lotus here:

Dash and mats definitely look 'custom'. It looks like it's been stored or very, very rarely driven so may need some degree of 're-commissioning'. I'd imagine the original tyres will be well dodgy after this amount of time so take care driving and get some new ones.
Otherwise it looks like new and awesome! Love the orange.

Thank you to everyone for the responses.
The additional recall is 2012/05 Ohlins damper stop washer change.
The vendor has stated that he has some service history for the vehicle. I fully agree that the tyres may be past their best and the car may need re-commissioning.
On the subject of tyres I'm in the process of replacing the ones on my 340R; not due to being worn out but due to the fact that they were manufactured in 2001!! They look perfect and I am thinking about keeping them to give to the new owner if I ever sell it and it ends up in a collection.

Ah yes, the damper washers - definitely get these done (although with such limited and probably dry use they may be OK initially). I had on a daily driver Exige and was able to snap them like a biscuit with my fingers...
Like your thinking on the 340R tyres, do the same with the 2-11.
One additional thing you may want to consider is lining the front wheel arches with dynamat etc. The front clam is very susceptible to star cracking due to stones pinging up off the tyres.
