yes happenned to me last week.

The law states that you can't group the letters together differently from the standard layout, so it's pretty clear what you can and can't do. However, since speed cameras ignore spacing I don't see it's an issue. I mean, when a cop does a numberplate check over the radio they don't read out the spaces do they, just the letters, so the spacing is irrelevant.

Satch - did they tell you you had to change it?

The issue is not for the speed cameras which produce a photo, its for the vehicle recognition cameras which are springing up everywhere which check the car details agains the road tax database.

These are totally electronic so need to have the plates at the proper spacing to work properly

You said it! Nothing to do with speed, or cameras, but they'll just do you for having an illegal number plate, if it's an offence, why provoke them?

Doesn't it go back to the old saying "If everyone else is doing it why can't I?". I see cars driving around with number plates that look like they were written with the flourish of a calligrapher's pen, others with very questionable use of black screwcaps, 13's that look like B's, the list is endless. I think I'll risk it...

Now that is a good enough excuse for me to get a new plate and mess with the spacing.

I'm currently single and considering this for a bit of a laugh...

Thanks, I was a surprised to find it available to be honest, especially at under £500. There are quite a few available like this, for example:

P 111R PP

is available for £250.

I wouldn't buy anything that depends of altering the spacing or the leters (e.g. funny angles, 4's that look like a's etc). If Automatic Numer Plate Recognistion is half as big as it looks like it will be you can be sure Plod, the MOT man, the plate maker etc will all be on your back.

I dont particularly care about the reg rules either, as I have K184TOM spaced

K18
4TOM

very bad in the eyes of the law! why I cant have 4 digits on the bottom when I can on the top who knows.

But as a word of warning, if you are given three producers in respect to your plate, they can insist on having your car demoted to a Q plate. This makes it a tad difficult to sell!!!

I don't know anything about the Automatic Numberplate Recognition System but I am a computer programmer and I've written a fair few search algorythms in my time. The first rule is, ignore spaces, punctuation, hyphens - anything other than text and numbers, before doing a search. I would find it hard to believe that any computerised system would be so inflexible that it would be thrown by incorrect letter spacing. But, hey, if it is then all the more reason to stick with my unorthadox layout!
