Seems really hard to find a "good" exige s2....
Discussion
Hi guys
I've been looking for a s2 exige for the past 6 weeks and driven too to bottom of the country to view 4 cars and none are acceptable - 2 have missed servicing and a few to many question marks, one other was ropey and would need a front and rear end respray, and the final one was just too expensive. I have seen one more to view but it's yellow but it just not me!
Here's hoping more come up - I'm all over the forums, eBay and auto trader, just hoping a good'un comes up soon ??
Any suggestions are welcome!

Hi, think it really depends what you're looking for. When I was looking for mine, I knew I wanted the Federal dash which gives you a passenger airbag which means the stereo is then in the middle of the dash instead of in front of the passenger. In my search I found only about 4 cars which matched my search criteria !I've been looking for a s2 exige for the past 6 weeks and driven too to bottom of the country to view 4 cars and none are acceptable - 2 have missed servicing and a few to many question marks, one other was ropey and would need a front and rear end respray, and the final one was just too expensive. I found Guy Mundy very helpful and he normally has or knows of Exiges for sale.
Toby
Looks like I have found a winner, holding to collect it over the next few weeks! Very happy!
It's got full service history, so much so the original book is full so I'll need to buy a new one ahead of its next service -do I order a new one from my local dealer as I can't find them online (well I have, but it was £80 off eBay - crazy!!!!)

£30k with 44k miles when did Lotus start acting like rare Pork !
I sold mine for £19k
The thing is new Elise is now better than the old Exige so the Sprint 220S on a 50/50 deal seems the best buy now prices are so high on these old models.
Like wise where the cup 260 was a great car, and I lusted after one, I would take the Elise cup 250 these days.
Unlike Porsche where the old cars are better and more driver focused, with Lotus the newer the car the better the build and gear change etc.

As usual totally wrong
There are a number of factors why the older cars pricing is increasing:
Half of the cars have been exported or killed off so numbers are getting smaller
The newer cars have some nice headline numbers but they are getting heavy. A lot of fun has been pulled out of the platform and replaced with cup holders and sound deadening
The new cars at 40k plus on the Elise or 32k for the 1.6 offer not really much difference from a car produced in 2001 they have the same chassis, everything inside is recognisable/in the same place
Theres a pique of interest in cars like the S1 which are a last in the line type car with such low weight new regulation mean nothing like this will ever be made again.
Finding a nice example of an older car is harder so people will pay a premium for a low miles/good condition car.

My comments are spot on sorry to say.
The cup 250 is a lighter car than the Exige 240 S and the older cars , are just that , old with a 20 year old gear shift.
the S2 Exiges are now not looking like value for a 2008 car most with >40k miles for >£30 and Cup260 are now daft prices.
the 220S were value at £22k but not at £30k when the new cars are much much better.
last of the S2 Exige was the RGB at 942 KG(and the 240S was 944) the Elise Cup 250 is 931KG Lighter than the outgoing Exige ;-) and there is a lighter one due in May :-) have fun ...
Added to which the charge cooler is far better than the old system on the 220/240 and 260.

My purchases tend to be about car and financial, I have driven both the 220 and 250 and in my opinion neither gives the power delivery of my 260 S2. Financially I bought mine 18months ago and I'd get my money back privately now. New 250's are a lovely car but at 50k I'd expect to lose 10k in the same 18 months, I just don't see the value in that
The 2ZZ engine has a reasonable amount of character a lot of this is missing from the later cars. No little vvti kick. The "2.5" cars that is the face-lifted cars with 2ZZ engines have their own little cult following with only around 50 made worldwide. The RGB was also configured in that way and they have good residuals with the Exige variant still pulling well into the mid 30s.
The old problem for Lotus is that the cars they made from 1996 to 2010 are so good the newer cars don't really offer that enticing an option to swap out of something many owners have customised and spent money on.
The v6 exige has lured a few owners but it's not something that's sold in huge numbers indeed production numbers of all the cars have been low since 2007 which does keep all the residuals up.
Dynamically the S2 Exige is a real sweet spot and the market has really woken up to them over the last 2 to 3 years. Likewise the S1 Elise and Exige. The S1 and early S2 just offer a totally different driving experience to the new cars. The K series cars have their own following including a fanatical following particularly in France as well as here.
Certain cars such as the S1 Exige, sport 135/160 S1s have pretty much doubled in price and sell more quickly than ever before. They are all cars the likes of which we will never see again and rightly they get snapped up.

steady that nearly looks like praise for the 2ZZ Gassing Station | Elise/Exige/Europa/340R | Top of Page | What's New | My Stuff
