Problems with immobiliser and a quick enquirey
Discussion
Hi there Everyone,
Okay, Im new here and hows it all going!!
Firstly I finally after waiting a very long time am now the proud owner of a lotus Elise!! The best car I have ever had!!
Just a little help from you guys if I may?
My car it seems, looking at the 2 key fobs that I have, and recently looking online, is fitted with a cobra immobiliser.
Cali I ask this first question..my car is registered 2002, and I don't have any paperwork with the immobiliser so I'm not sure what version I have, but with all Elise's that were introduced in that year, were they fitted with cobra immobiliers as standard? I'm only asking this as that I am experiment some probs which if i can't get fixed then I want to keep everything as standard so that I'll then get another cobra immobiliser fitted!! Can you still get the same ones still?
So the probs I'm getting is that recently after when I have switched the engine off..the dashboard LED flashing light doesnt come on anymore!! I'm not sure why this is happening, and when I press any of the buttons on the key fob, the small red light flashes quickly!! I can still turn the engine on, but no immobiliser red light on the dashboard!! (I'm right in saying that the immobiliser red light is the one that is situated on either the speedo or rev dial) I can't remember which dial it is now!! Hehe!!
If I'm needing a new immobiliser, may I ask you guys if I can still get the same cobra immobiliser, when it comes to the shop to install it, can I ask them not to install any new flashing lights ( i dont want them to drill tbh ) and connect the new immobilier to the existing standard LED flashing red light that is there? Also can anyone advise me as to what batteries to get, and to open the fobs to fit the batteries, is it a case of gently priseing them open?
Cheers Everyone massively appreciated!!

Hi - quiet here isn't it...
In general you will find that there is a lot more activity on the Seloc forums, and some good info on the security systems in the Tech Wiki.
The alarm/immobiliser in the Elise will be 8185/8186 if it's a Cobra one. There are user manuals on-line which might be worth a read, and Cobra are usually pretty good at responding to emails. I don't think this model is available any more.

Once you turn the engine off or press the button on the key fob the immobiliser is inactive for 2 minutes (I think that is the length of time). This means you can start the car again without have to press the fob again.
The immobiliser only activates again after the 2 minutes of the engine being stopped (or fob being pressed) after which is when you will see the red light flashing again.
From what you describe it sounds normal and to be working ok. You could try sitting in the car and timing how long until the light starts to flash again... but if you end up sitting in the car all night it may have a problem :-)

Hi all!!
Awwww many thanks for the replies!! Ahh it's a real nightmare as I had a thought about trying to get is looked at, but loads of these car audio/security shops online jet huff and puff and say 'no mate, you need a new immobilier and it'll cost you £500+vat!!!' I get that feeling that I'm trying to be ripped off really as I'm pretty sure I can get this sorted with you guys and you've all been really aswsome with your responses so far.
Okay an update...when I have switched on my headlights, the LED immobiliser light comes on and stays on and then when I switch off my main headlights, it goes off and doesn't flash or anything after, so I'm now pretty sure that this whole issue is simply a wiring problem and that perhaps my headlights are causing some sort of a short circuit problem perhaps??
Would or could it be a simply case of disconnecting the battery and then reconnecting it?? I'm not sure as I'm not very electrical minded guys!! Def def the immobiliser is not re-arming at all!! When I switch my engine off, I'm leaving it well over the required time for the immobiliser to kick in but I can still start the engine. I have found that I can get cobra thatchum 2 immobilisers on the net for around the £50 mark..is this advisable as a last resort? Does anyone know if a normal car garage would be able to fit this...I doubt a normal car stereo shop would as it's not their product!!
also I really don't want any holes drilled in my car to make way for a new LED warning light so can a new cobra immobiliser which I think is very much the same as the one I have, be wired up to the existing dashboard LED light?? Cheers everybody and please if someone can shed some light on the above stuff for me that would be really ace ace!! Massive thanks xxxxxx karim
