So I contorted myself under there to have a look at the clicking/rattle I get when operating the throttle pedal, and there is a black l shaped piece of metal which in effect picks up the end of the throttle cable. This clinks and clacks across a sort of triangularish zincy looking piece of bracketry. All the various bushings and pivots are all designed to be flexible and loose, so I guess they all do it. I was thinking of just adding a single piece of tank tape to the l shaped bit and to the bracket, to avoid the metal on metal clack and I don't think that would interfere with the throttle operation. Has anyone done similar or got a better fix

If it's black I'd suggest it's already been upgraded (http://www.eliseparts.com/products/show/56/370/improved-throttle-linkage/).

I wouldn't put tape there, as it'll probably mash up and get mangled, but you could try bending the metal so it doesn't touch?

No I don't have that but I think I will get it.

If you look at this picture, next to "how do I know if I've got the problem", you can see the black rectangle to the left and the big zincy plate that it catches on as it moves in and out pulling the cable you can see heading off next to the clutch pedal. Thing is, finding this pic has perhaps explained the problem! If my bearing has collapsed, there could be play there causing more scraping than normal, and also losing me some throttle travel and occasional high idling! Presume the linkage kit you identified will sort that, I can't work out exactly what it replaces just looking at the picture!

cheers

Yeah, should fix it. I did it on my previous S1, and will shortly be doing it on my current one too. It's not night and day, but at least you can rule it all out while things are in bits.
