I ve recently purchased an s1 (basic 118hp variant) which is completely stock currenty and intend to broadly keep it as such but if I'm honest I wouldn't mind a bit more spirited engine sound.
Now I suppose i could install an induction kit or a exhaust system but would like to ask what is the most favoured people do to enhance the sound? Also are there any performance benefits?

Cheers guys, my car is not a daily drive but i should clarify when i previously referred to spirited I didn't mean louder but better sound. I think the stock system resembles the sound of a hoover in certain revs... That's what I would like to change but not bleed my ears in the process. The car isn't a track toy too so needs to remain civilised.
My S1 has the Larini sport exhaust and it's just about right. A few pops and bangs on the overrun and not too loud. Hurricane looks good and MAY add a couple of horses but there is no change in the sound that can be heard above the Larini and it's just another modification that the insures can charge you extra for.

Interesting you brought up the insurance - out of curiosity what was the premium increase for the Larini?Motorsport3 said:

I have non standard suspension, sports car, Larini exhaust and aftermarket induction. I don't think my premium is any higher than for a standard car.Specialist insurance is the way forward.

I have just today renewed my S1 Elise insurance and my car has the following "upgrades":Larini exhaust
Nitron Street series shocks
Momo removeable steering wheel
Hardtop fitted (now not in the spring and summer)
Alpine stereo
Cost was £275.00 fully comprehensive with a £200 excess and a value of £10k and a limited mileage of 5k p.a. But I'm of mature years and that doesn't include commuting.
That's not too bad I suppose. Admiral sent us a GBP35 additional charge notice the other day b/c we hadn't told them that on my wife's 2010 a-class had parking sensors fitted. I called them to argue that exactly b/c the car has the sensors it's less likely to cause a damage. But they claimed that it's the replacement cost that the premium reflects...
So I'm thinking in theory if the replacement part is not more expensive than the OEM then the premium shouldn't massively change (save the case that the car is modified to be considered dangerous).
