Smell of Petrol
Discussion
OK, dumb question as I think I know the answer to this one but worth checking.
When my elise is standing still (after being run) I get a smell of petrol wafting in (not a strong smell just slight). Must be the seal of the petrol filler cap. Is this normal ? I've only really noticed it as the weather has got warmer.
The answer to this one is to keep the car moving and fast, GRIN

does the cap still hiss when you open it to refuel ?
ie fill the tank - drive 200 miles - open the cap - is there a hiss - if there is then the system is still pressurised so you are not likely to be leaking fuel
If there isn't the you MAY have a small hole in the fuel filler neck where the clam bolt flexes and may rub against the pipe.
Many people have reported the smell of fuel in the cab - mine does this too but I still have a pressurised tank....

Make sure your car isn't subject to this safety recall:
Campaign 1999/1R - Fuel Pipework Joint Integrity - Elise.
Affected cars:
All Elise models in the following V.I.N. range:
‘99 model year (VIN character 10 = X) from serial number 7232 (last 4 digits) to 7571;
Less the following cars which have been reworked at the factory:
7346, 7347, 7348, 7350, 7351, 7357, 7358, 7368, 7381, 7383, 7502, 7503, 7522, 7523, 7530, 7532, 7533,
7539, 7546, 7547, 7550, 7557, 7561, 7564, 7566 to 7570
Background
It has been found that a change to the fuel return hose specification, and a dry assembly process for the fuel line push fit connectors, could result in a reduction in the integrity of the fuel feed and return systems. There is a very small chance that leakage from a fuel line connection could initiate an engine bay fire. This campaign was issued to enable the specification of the fuel return hose to be identified, and appropriate action to be taken to ensure complete fuel system integrity.
Action
Lotus is using its own sales records in conjunction with DVLA data to inform the owners of all affected vehicles, that the vehicle is subject to a precautionary safety recall, and advising them to contact their dealer to have the necessary rectification work carried out. The modification will be performed entirely free of charge, and should take approximately 1 hour to complete. Any authorised Lotus dealer will be pleased to carry out this work, but if you should have any queries or concerns, please telephone for assistance: From the U.K.: 0800 917 9199; From outside the U.K.: +44 (0)1953 608853.
