Just in case someone else has the same problem:

My Nov 2001 S2 has been suffering from a resonant vibration at low revs (mainly when pulling away at junctions). Recently it's got worse with an audible clunking sound at low speed ...

Not expecting to find anything obvious I started digging around in the boot and noticed that the wiring loom to the rear lights had come loose (the original tape seems to have melted and let go).

The net result was that both the loom and the connectors have been vibrating and hitting the bodywork. Given that the bottom of the boot is like a big drum I guess it was amplifying the noise ...

A few strips of strong tape later and the problem appears to be solved. I've also stuck the sound proofing down as that was also moving about. Phew!

Could this be happening on my S1 too? I get an audible vibration at low revs/speed and it certainly sounds like something knocking against something else (can I be any more vague?!!).
