The scrutineers at the last race gave loads of us a warning about our cars running too loud and they are going to start enforcing the static noise testing as per the regulations (they never enforced it previously).

I need to pass a 110dB test at 5,500rpm at 1m and 45 deg from the exhaust tip. I have a 230bhp Scholar Evo2 K-series engine, no cat, 4-2-1 header and a Magnaflow silencer. It reads at 117dB as per their test.

What exhaust would those in the know recommend to get me below the 110dB limit, with minimal power loss and lightest weight (and lowers cost)? I see people talking about systems being too loud, but I get the impression they may not be working on the same scale as I am and it's difficult to find hard numbers on what they mean by "loud".

on the face of it, your at silly loud levels?

I can only imagine your silencer is (1) small and/or (2) empty?

I would suggest you need at least a 6" silencer as long as will fit the car, something like this:

However, even that may not be enough, (depends what limit you want to get down to? 103/105 seems to be the current limits here).

you may also want to think about adding one of these too (not sure what manifold you have so if it's possible?)

Mike @ Edwards Motorsport will be able to make you exactly what you want for a very reasonable cost. He made the system/silencer for our Motorsport Elise with exactly the same spec and we never had an issue with noise, and the silencer will be repackable for when the packing does start to burn out.

Yep - you're right. I have very little by way of silencer at present and I suspect they're even less than that in it.

I think you're saying that any after market exhaust should get me through a 110dB noise test. Good - that's what I hoped.

I'll give Edwards Motorsport a call and have a chat to them. I presume they have the jig to make me what I need without having the car? Repackable is perfect.

110dB at 5,500 rpm, 1m and 45 deg from exhaust tip.

What is the consensus on Lanari, Janspeed, Elise Parts etc for power and weight (assuming they can all get me to below 110dB)?

That kind of explains it!

No wonder it's loud, that's not going to do anything much.

As you have still got the lotus std manifold, the quick, cheap solution is to buy a std fitting silencer and CAT pipe, these will just bolt straight on, that said, if you having to get a CAT pipe, might as well get the silenced one as it can only help noise wise all be it at the cost of a little bit of weight.

The EP ones would be my choice for an off the shelf solution, and will not have any performance penalty (may even be better)

I assumed the 4-2-1 manifold was not standard. Am I wrong? Nice piece of kit to come with a std Elise.

117dB eek Keep away from Norfolk then. Norfolk plod like to try and fine you if you are above 90dB. They tried with my car (not a Lotus though) as I read 94.1dB, BUT they use ISO5130 as a test which they add their own results too.(pass is below 82dB & prosecute above 90dB). They test incorrectly and give out tickets incorrectly as I proved in court, but that's another story.
Many race tracks use a similar test, but each track has it's own limits on noise.

I will. It's a race car. In China.
