Hello All,

I hope to join the club of Lotus Elise S2 owners but the cost of car insurance is stopping me.

When i use various compare the market search engines only a few sensible quotes appear. When i click through to their website and add more details (as required by that insurance company) the price dramatically increases.

I have heard stories that 26 year old males with 0 No Claim Bonuses have their Lotus insured for approx half a grand.

I've heard joining certain clubs help and finding a specialist brings the price down. My question is what does every pay to insure there Lotus Elise S2 and with what insurance company?

Many Thanks

Simon

Don't bother with 'normal' insurance companies, they will cripple you as you are finding out !!
Use classic insurance companies
like classicline or lancaster, carole nash etc. there are loads listed in the classic car mags.
And joining Club Lotus would prob help too as you get membership discounts at their affiliated partners.

Be careful. Many classic policies do not accrue No Claims Discount, and any NCD you may have is lost if not used within 2 years.

Obviously if you have none already there is nothing to lose, but you should at least consider the cost over time rather just 1 year.

I only found this out by accident, when I was automatically transferred to a classic policy but my then insurance company (I'd been with them for years and following a takeover the structure of available policies changed). Two years later the renewal was more than I could get with conventional insurance and my NCD, luckily I managed to get my NCD tranferred before it timed out!

Happy Hunting, hope it all turns out for you.

Regards, Neil

The market for Elise insurance has been a bit unstable recently, with CCI - one of the very popular providers - finding itself unable to insure the under-40's. I was with them and as a result they couldn't cover my wife to drive the car.

One Answer were good for me in the end.

Hi everyone, thank you for your prompt replies. I had no idea about you could lose your NCB with Classic Insurance companies for those reaons stated.

I don't think an S2 Elise is old enough for most classic policies anyway?

You don't need a classic policy, IMO, you just want a standard policy from a specialist. You might want one with track day cover, though, if that appeals to you.

Insurance companies have come up with the expression 'Cherished Car' policies now, which the Elise thankfully falls into. You will see lots of recommendations & discussions if you trawl specialist Elise Forums like MLOC or SELOC. I used Hagerty in the past, but they now insist on you having a daily driver as well which I haven't got, so I'm currently with Adrian Flux which was by far and away the cheapest. Just be aware that you will have to answer the most brainless questions from their employees like 'how many seats has it got'!!

I'd recommend ringing up Claire Ironside at A Plan on 01635 874646 as she's a very experienced broker whereas Flux & Hagerty are Ins companies.

Good luck.

Wow, thanks for that! May i please ask what are you paying a year (even approx)? Is the car OK to drive 365?

I've always insured mine with specialist policies - CCI for years, then lately with 1Answer. They're good for things like modifications and track day cover, but I've not found them to be as restrictive as a classic policy and the NCD works in the usual way.

I'll be watching this thread with interest. I bought my VX220 last June and went with Chris Knott; it was a choice I had to make in haste, and I have since found out I could do a lot better.

Ditto on the A Plan recommendation. I went with them years ago for my motorbike and then my first Esprit. As mentioned they are a broker and do all the legwork for you. And remember its not just the cost of the policy - overall value is based on the Ts&Cs such as excess, legal cover, windscreen, mileage limitations etc. The cheapest is not always the best.

I've continued with them for my second Esprit, my other two cars and of course the bike. And since last year my home and contents insurance too. In all cases they seemed to get very good deals for me. The house insurance for example was a third of the DirectLine price for a much better policy!

The added bonus is you are not divulging your contact details to a comparison site so don't get inundated by emails from umpteen insurance companies for the next 6 months. And did I say they do all the legwork for you?

FYI, my Esprit renewal last October was £130 cheaper than the previous year, with the same company. Prices do appear to be coming down, especially for us old codgers....

I've tried all the usual specialists and ultimately found that Admiral were cheapest - I'm paying 400 quid for both the Elise and Octavia on a multi-car policy.

That's really cheap. I just did a single car quote with Admiral and it was £350 p/m

I am 34 with 7 years NCB living in the lowest risk category of postcode, which probably helps somewhat. hehe

Knock off the (60%?) reduction from the no-claims bonus and that'd push it up to a grand a year (so 500 per car). I wouldn't have thought the difference between a 34 year-old and a 26 year-old would be THAT great, what rating is your postcode?

Cheers for that - My area is D*. I turn 27 in <1 month and i will have 1 Years NCB in a couple of months.

For the past few years i have been insured on my g/f's racking up 0 ncb. Even if she is the main driver its still high... grrr!

D* looks to be perhaps slightly worse than average, from an insurance perspective (assuming that site is right). I guess that could account for the relatively high quotes. It might be interesting to try putting in a group-A postcode to see what difference it makes.
