s1 price rise

Is it my imagination or have prices of s1 elise risen significantly to the point where there more now than a early s2? I wonder if there now getting much thinner on the ground due to write offs and export? i would like one for everyday summer use and set myself for a s2 but wonder if the s1 is a far better investment? However i don't think either will loose much- any thoughts?

Looking at howmanyleft, the number of basic Elise models registered in the UK has pretty much halved since the peak, although that must include some early S2 cars as it still shows a rise up until the end of 2002.

There are noticeably fewer for sale than there were even a year or two ago, although it's also a time of year when perhaps fewer people think of selling a convertible sportscar. Even so, prices do seem to have firmed recently, with noticeably more asking over £10,000, and very little available now below £9,000, where previously the price range was more £6-10,000 for a plain S1 for quite a while, with only exceptional examples breaking the £10,000 barrier.

Comparing S1 and S2 models, I think the S1 might always have the edge as it was the original and is rarer, and any price rise will likely happen sooner, but long term I don't think there will be a massive difference assuming both are well maintained to original spec.

Good point- i guess anyone can put there's up for 10k but if people are only prepared to spend 8k or so then that surely is there real value! I think it could be a bit of supply and demand though as there seems few cars about at the present moment in time!

While that's true about asking price versus actual selling price, it was probably also true when asking prices were generally a couple of grand lower than they are now.

Agree - if I were asking £10k and thought I could get it, I would not take £8k for instance.

A lot of classic/modern classic cars are increasing in price, some quite alarmingly so I can see the Elise gaining with the rest of them and don't see why this should be any different. Cars that I have seen rise, even quite steeply over the past 12 months include:

BMW E36 M3, Porsche 911 GT3, any air cooled 911, Porsche 968, Peugeot 205 GTI, Lotus Elan etc.

With newer cars getting more tech focused and even Lotus building heavier cars, there does appear to be demand for back-to-basics machines. Of course, prices are not helped by a lot being exported, never to return.

A lot of these cars are in very limited supply in the UK and good ones will only increase in value. Good if you have one and want to sell but not so good if you want to buy or replace what you have...

£10k for a nice original well serviced S1 does not seem OTT to me, particularly given some of the percentage increases seen for other marques/models in recent times.
