I'm early in my search for a Elise. I'm looking for 2005 - 2007 sort of age but I can not see what the difference is between Elise S and Elise R. Can someone please explain the differences

Thanks

The engine was the main difference then with the S being the 134 bhp 1ZZ engine and the R being the 189bhp 2ZZ engine.

yes Basically the R has variable valve timing, giving it an extra chunk of power.

2005 will also put you in late 111S territory which is a different engine again - a 156bhp K-series VVC lump (in a significantly lighter car with a few other differences); and 111R (which is the same engine as the "R").

Does anyone know what the price difference was when new?

Both have variable valve vvti but the R has added Lift vvLti, which gives you the additional kick at 7k rpm, whichever is best is personal preference, some prefer linear power, some prefer the kick.

And you can get the R reflashed to give a smoother transition to the high lift cam.

Don't forget as well, if you buy the R, you can always add the supercharger at a later date, while you can't with the S
