Apologies if this is daft question !
The Toyota engined S produces a healthy, yet slightly less desirable 134 BHP, it seems pretty well reflected in the prices.
So I wondered what does it take, in engineering terms and cash to take the S to the next level, say 156 BHP the same as the K Series 111s ?
It just occurred to me, that the newer S goes for relatively cheap money, and if I bought one and I later fancied a little more poke, I could just get the cheque book out :-)

Tell me I'm very wrong ;-)

A TRD airbox and full 2bular manifold and system will free up a few horses.
I had one for 4 years/40k and loved every minute, 1zz is bomb proof and later cars are generally very well built. 5 speed box is a peach too.
Peanuts to run and insure.
Chuck a set of Nitrons on and you get one fun little car

Agree with that, but still think you'll be a good way short of 155bhp.

That might improve the noise but won't make much difference if any to the output without changing the mapping.

Yup. I'd also imagine the 4-2-1 would affect torque more than bhp, but again not by a huge margin.

The filter and manifold certainly didn't have that big an impact on my K series, and you're talking cams and headwork to get to 155bhp ish (although obviously that's starting at less than the Toyota).

Jims website quotes 15-18bhp and gains in torque with that set up and without mapping.
