Tempted by an S1

but the soft top looks as secure as Cleggs seat next election

how safe are they in keeping people out (excluding a sharp knife of course)?

Not very safe at all I'd suggest. On the other hand, what is inside to nick?

Elise is hardly a target for joy riders and if nothing is on shown inside not worth shredding to the top to get it. My only concern would be jealousy driven vandals, ie. he's got an "expensive" car so lets trash it.

You can get in without damaging them in a couple minutes easily enough.

Always garaged my Elise, but when I had an MX-5 I just left it unlocked. Rather someone open it up and find nothing than cut or smash their way in.

Main thing I'd do is stick a shower cape on it when parked up.

I'd agree with this - besides with any car really a thief can just break a window if they really want in.

If I had to park my Elise in the street (which I have done a couple of times visiting people) one of my concerns would be e.g. a drunk lout kicking the door mirrors. That's a risk with any car of course, just a bit more so with one that might be perceived (as Tony says) as "expensive". Actually my main concern would be if there's a lot of on-street parking then cack-handed parking in front or behind it by other people who end up nudging it (if they crack the fibreglass it won't be cheap).

If you are worried about the roof getting slashed you could fit a hard top. My biggest concern about leaving it outside is all weather is the S1 tendancy to let water in....alot.

I've street parked mine quite often visiting people, and it hasn't had anything done to it. I suppose it helps that you can see that there is nothing inside to steal.

Mine is always kept outside and doesn't seem to have much of a problem with it. I did fit the plastic engine cover from a S2 k-series on it, which took a bit of fettling but stopped the misfires after heavy rain.

As fo people kicking a door mirror off - it's a part from a Metro, so it's much cheaper to replace than the mirrors on an MX5 (my MX5 mirrors fell off, apparently they all do).

I park mine on the street. No problems 99% of the time. Put some waterproofing stuff on the roof occasionally and it doesn't usually leak. Shower cap can be handy though, otherwise generally if it's raining enough for flood warnings you'll need a towel in the morning!

Have had a wing mirror kicked off, though there was around 10 along the street done at the same time so it wasn't just singled out. Metro mirror meant mine was probably the cheapest to replace, though for this reason I wouldn't buy carbon ones!

I was fairly paranoid about the car when I first got it but don't worry any more. smile

They're easy to break into; I don't know anybody who it has happened to though(outside of broken windows etc for sat-navs, but that's no different to other cars).

Mines always outside on the street. As elsewhere, there's fk all to nick - no glovebox, no storage, no nothing. Be happy to leave the doors unlocked TBH - they're not going to get it started without the immobiliser, and no other reason to break in.

My relative did have the roof on his slashed about 8 years ago though.

Buy a decent roof or make sure the seals fit properly and it won't let water in.

So your biggest concern isn't necessary! smile

You can also fit a removeable steering wheel which you can take into the house each evening.

I have one of these in my other car. I have to lock it in the boot whenever I park anywhere other than home, which isn't really a secure solution on an S1 Elise. Plus you can just bolt on any steering wheel instead of the quick release adapter, so it's only a deterent to a casual thief.

I only use mine as it makes getting in and out much easier on the other car.

I parked my elise on the street for about 3 years in London , the biggest problem you will face is careless parking the front and rear clams will get cracked !

In the end I sold it my after a 4x4 back up the front of the elise and parked itself on the front, lucky for me the owner of the 4x4 left a note with his details on my broken windscreen , so after the car get repaired l couldn't face watching it slowly being used as a parking aid again , so I sold it.

I had snap off steering wheel best anti theft device ever.

Mine has lived on the street for the past 7-8 years. An Elemental shower cap makes a huge difference in keeping rain water out.

I'd say this is your biggest worry, without a doubt! Some folk don't seem to give a toss when they bang doors into yours, or reverse into your bumper. To them, its just a car, a tool to get from A to B. For the enthusiast, Well you know.
Unless i had a Garage, or a Driveway, i don't think i'd own a car like such. There is also the enveous folk. I had a Civic Type R, 24 hours old, parked in my parents street, Keyed the full length of the car!!! So for these two reasons, and if you dont have the driveway or garage, buy something that won't upset you if it gets bashed.
