I am currently insured on my S1 Elise with REIS and have been for about 3 years. I had the following endorsements:

Offence Code Date of Offence Fine (£) Penalty Points
SP30 23/02/09 60 3
SP30 24/10/11 60 3

I recently got zapped twice in two days in my company car, both times on motorways so now it looks like this:

Offence Code Date of Offence Fine (£) Penalty Points
SP30 23/02/09 60 3
SP30 24/10/11 60 3
SP50 13/06/12 60 3
SP50 14/06/12 60 3

I have just rang the insurance to declare the points and have been told they would have to refer it to the underwriter. They rang back and have told me they have declined to cover me and reminded me I have to declare I have been declined cover when asked.

So, anyone here insure an Elise with that many points? If so, who are you with?

You will probably end up with one of the "bad boy" companies. The speedings are bad but not insurmountable.

Being refused insurance is a serious matter although many insurers take differing views. The fact that your current insurers no longer want to insure you is an underwriting decision by them rather than a declinature, so I don't see that as being too much of a problem. However you should disclose it to any new insurers just in case.

If you get really stuck PM me with a contact number and I'll see what I can do

Your February '09 endorsement doesn't count anymore? Or are they looking for all convictions within the last five years?

Don't think the insurers are interested in totting up, only in convictions in last 5 years.

Correct. They said the big issue was the fact I have picked up 9 points within a year.

I'm sure someone will insure you, but I've a feeling it's not going to be cheap. frown

Bit harsh to refuse cover though, given the status that carries. What was wrong with a £30k premium?

Bring back traffic cops to sort out the real problem of centre lane owner drivers and people driving too slow etc etc .
Cameras are not the answer to road safety ..
......
I'd recommend a snooper or equivalent device to help keep the points down

My thoughts precisely! I'm kicking myself about the one on the M40 - it was in a variable speed limit area and I knew there were cameras. I'm guessing I was a little late slowing down as I went into it or maybe a little eager as the traffic cleared.

The one in Scotland p**sed me off though - It was on a very long 3 stretch of quiet motorway, in good conditions. Most people go a bit fast there and can do so safely, but catching people speeding past schools is not such a money earner!

I've considered a Snooper but the only certain way of avoiding points is to drive like I'm driving Miss Daisy.

My renewal arrived the day I rang REIS to inform them of the endorsements. It was going to be £504.44 until they were informed. I've just spoken to Adrian Flux and they can cover me for just over £700, which I think is pretty reasonable.

I've just received my documents from Adrian Flux. I noticed a couple of errors so I have just called them to amend them. It had the answer 'no' against the box 'Have you had motor insurance cancelled, declined, or special conditions imposed?'. Their response was they'll leave it as it is, as it's not like I've had a policy cancelled for non-disclosure or fraud, and will just make a note on the file that I have told them.

It only "counts" for 3 years.

It will stay on your licence for 4 years but means nothing after 3 years.

Insurers normally ask about any "convictions" in last 5 years whether they are on or off or count or don't count.

there are a number of companies who will take you, and although you have to disclose the declinature it probably wont affect you.

on a side note, get this now http://www.chauffeurplan.com/ , I've had to claim in the past and it is a very usefull product if there is a chance you may use your licence.

They also cover being unable to drive through health issues too. My claim was for a driver for 6 mths following an arm injury

Hmmm... Don't want to sound patronising but how is it that I've only collected one £60 fine and 3 points for speeding since 1977? Sure, things are more difficult since the advent of cameras but I've never been caught by one (and I don't dawdle)- basically don't take the piss and you'll be fine. On camera free stretches of road you chance your arm with traffplod. I don't wish to be harsh Ganglandboss but your problem here is your own making and doesn't really reflect well on the Lotus owning community who generally pride themselves in owning a performance car but also knowing when to use that performance. Sorry.
Wish you the best of luck in sorting the insurance problem though.

Yawn. Anyway didn't he say he was in his company car? Also, his annual mileage may be well in excess of your own, making the 1977 comment pointless. I'm sure GLB realises what a naughty member of your 'community' he is rolleyes

To be fair to GLB, he hasn't come on here ranting and raving about how cameras are nothing but money making scams and proclaiming how this is everyone else's fault but his.

He merely has set out all of his offences and requested some help on sourcing an insurer, so I don't think letting him know that it's all his own making is really necessary, it appears he is more than aware, judging by his subsequent posts.

Up till now I was pleasantly suprised by all the positive contributions and lack of 'high horse' type lectures.

To reply to both posts since my last:

Annual Mileage: I have seldom covered less then 20k pa in private mileage: for about 20 years I never covered less than 40k in company cars. I'm pretty certain that for 15 year period I probably covered at least 50k pa - mixture of company car, Elise, exes car, various company vans and other cars available to me. Living in South Devon and covering the country on behalf of employers meant big mileage!

Cameras: Despite error in my earlier post I've never been caught by one. My one speeding offence was after being 'pulled' by unmarked traffplod and it was fair - no complaints at all. Just have to ask how I (and many others on here and seloc manage big mileages without incurring licence threatening penalties???)

Responsibility: Having incurred 9 points in just over 3 years I might be minded to think about my driving style. 3 points from a camera is just tough luck these days (I'll admit I may have been lucky!). 6 tells you to be more careful, 9 within fairly short order would tell me to take a damn good look at my observation when driving. However to incur a further 3 the day after conceding 3 to take my 'totting up total to 9'.......sorry that's not just bad luck.

Effect on Lotus community: Believe it or not there is a very strong one regardless of Petrus1983's valuation of it. If every Elise owner were in a position of having 9 points for speeding on their licence then the implications on costs of insurance for all would be quiet serious regardless of the Elise being the second car or points being gathered in a company vehicle. Everything gets fed into underwriter's databases which crunch the numbers which produce the premiums.

GLB: Sorry to hear about your woes and hope someone can help you (and that these incidents don't affect your employment - as mentioned by one poster, being refused insurance is pretty serious and I hope it doesn't impact on your company car insurance). Take it easy thumbup
