OK, so it looks as though the ball joint was not an issue, just the fact that the car had been left standing outside in the rain for 10 days, meant that the disks rusted up and that was causing the knocking(I really hope they have this right)

Anyways, that has now brought on the need for new pads and disks sooner than I'd hoped.
What are the options ? I am currently running standard disks and Yellow stuff pads and would prefer something better, but not at a significant cost hike. From a timing perspective this could not have come at a much worse time, as am in the process of buying a house, but at the same time realise the importance of good brakes.
Open to any suggestions. Pads wise, I know of EBC, Pagids, Mintex, CL. Disks, I am only aware of Lotus or EBC. what are peoples opinions on these, what makes a good combination. As I have mentioned previously I have next to no knowledge on the mechanics of a car, so all suggestions welcomed

There's a few options listed on the SELOC wiki:
http://wiki.seloc.org/a/Brake_pads

In terms of my own experiences (road use only and on my S1 111S with EBC turbo groove discs) - I originally had EBC Greenstuff pads on, and I wasn't very keen on them. I switched to Mintex 1144, which were better. I'm currently running with the Elise Shop ESR800 (which are aimed to being similar to the pagid RS42 pads, but cheaper) - as I don't do much hard braking I think they're wasted on me tho' and I'd just go back to Mintex 1144 next time. CL pads have had a lot of positive comments, although there's a thread on SELOC with concerns about them due to some owners having them crumble (I think there's been an attempt to collect batch numbers to try look into whether it was just a dodgy batch - there's plenty of people who've had no problem with them at all).

If you are running standard engine, just stick with the OEM discs. They are really good.

I track my car and run standard discs with Mintex 1144 pads. Never had any issues

your joking right?

std disks are shockingly bad, so I can only assume you drive like Miss Daisy.

^^^^^^^What Scuffers said.

The OE Discs are very poor, wear very quickly and get hot and wobly on track.

Get the best discs and pads you can afford, ideally some AP rotors and Pagids

OK, so Pagid 42's seem to be the best option, but AP disks are out of my league currently, given the money situation.

So what disks ? Are EBC really the only viable alternative ? If so which ones Turbo Groove or Ultimax ? Both the same price.
Scuffers, you say no to OEM, but then offer no alternative. Given AP are out purely due to cost, do you have a suggestion ?

Have a look on here:

Buy the best you can afford. Doesn't have to be AP.

Give Dave at Seriously Lotus a call. He will talk you through the various pros and cons of the different discs.

These and about the minimum IMHO, fine for normal road use and light trackday stuff, and I would suggest Mintex 1144's for road use, and Padgid RS4-2 if your looking at trackday stuff...

I'm using Mintex 1144s (with standard discs) and they seem pretty decent for road use, although they tend to squeal when cold. If I have to replace the discs, I suppose I'll be looking for something a bit lighter. They do fade a little if pushed really hard on the road, though, so I can quite imagine that they're not really up to track use.

I went for Elieparts Ultimax discs with Pagid RS42 pads. Been on for about 6 months, welcome to come round and have. A look / try. Only problem is we are away until the 30th. Only issue I the front pads rattle, it's better with the Eliseparts anti rattle things, but not perfect.
