I am back in the UK and need to remove the rear wheel. My lovely brother has stolen all my tools and is 250km away, so a trip to Halfords by bus is on the cards.

So I do not end up frustrated, does anyone know the exact tools I need? Socket sizes...and is there a certain procedure? I have never used the locking nut thing, for example.

All advice apprecaited.

Read this first.

and this.

Buy a low entry jack or drive your car onto a couple of planks of wood to allow access to normal jacks.

You'll need a brace bar and a 17mm socket and if you have locking wheel nuts the wheel nut tool.

Apply the hand brake and leave the car in gear and chock the wheels.

Loosen the wheel bolts of but not too much.

Jack the car on jacking point A. You should never rely on the jack to hold the car and as such you should use axle stands if working under the car.

Remove the bolts and then the wheel.

Thanks for above, appreciated.

I have just seen I do have the locking nut and yes, the tool to remove it is with the car.....but having never used one of these I am a bit unsure how it works??? If it is all there, I have what looks like a hex bolt with two lugs either side and a black plastic tube like tool.

The tube is to remove the lock nut cover (if fitted), warning though, make sure you don't put it on a standard wheel nut or its unlikely you'll get it off without breaking it! You then just push the key onto the locking nut whilst rotating until it aligns properly & pushes home, then you can use the socket to undo. Make sure you keep some firm inward pressure as you undo so as not to damage the key or locknut if it slips off.
