New alternator running very hot - anyone come across this?

99 S1 K series.
My old alternator died so I dropped in a new Bosch one. When I start the engine now, the new alternator gets hot to the point of smoking within a couple of minutes. All the cables seem in good order. It could be that whatever is causing this new alternator to heat up fried the previous one so I am keen to get it sorted.
Anyone seen this before or recommend what to check?
