Thinking of a set of these, since they are pretty much the only reasonable option where I am. Will be used for "spirited" summer driving, and winter driving in the dry. I'd like not to be killed if I'm caught out in the rain. No track. Any and all opinions are appreciated!

Toyo Proxes 4; didn't know there was another title. These:

195/50 16 on the front
225/50 15 on the rear

wouldn't 16's on the front, 15's on the rear look a bit daft?

I think Toyo has only started manufacturing Proxes 4 about five years ago. At the moment I have some Champiros on the rear 225/50/16. I could only source these Toyos for the same profile. The set of four, balanced, installed, and even inflated, comes to 410 of your British pounds. PDG I'd say. (Pretty Damned Good) I'll let you know how they are. Except that I can tell you now that they'll go 'round and 'round just fine and not be able to tell you much more, as I'm a little green.

I'm going to try the 16s on the front first just to see if I like it better. Has anyone tried it? It should be easier to get the back end out, I reckon.

You do know your front wheels are 15" right? You can't put 16" tyres on a 15" wheel. They fall off.

Also if you were going to put a 16" wheel on the front you'd want to replace your standard 16" rear with a 17" wheel, which means using a 235/40R17 tyre.

Definitely don't put the rear wheels on the front and the front wheels on the rear.

If you want to make it easier to get the back out the easiest and cheapest way of doing this is to fit standard sized tyres and increase rear tyre pressure a bit. Although the Elise doesn't really have the spare steering lock you'll need for a drift machine. And sliding cars around is best left to tracks where you have a bit of safe run-off when it goes wrong.

Hey Captain

Thank you for gently letting me know that, if I was serious about putting 16s on the front & 15s on the rear, that I'm a complete idiot. The problem with forums is that one can't glean a sarcastic 'tone of voice', which I had in spades. I would never be so daft! - and I don't really want the back end out, unless of course I do use trays as per http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=8CiaQq6u6BY. Being rear wheel drive I think I'd have to think that one through a bit more... any suggestions would be helpful... but only as a theoretical exercise of course!

Would be interested in how they perform, more choice is always a good thing when t comes to tyres.

Will let you know. The tread is reasonably close to the T1-R, so I imagine the Proxes 4 should be a fairly close comparison. Like I say, I don't have much experience when it comes to comparing tyres, but will have a mate drive it who is much more seasoned and pass along his opinion.

Here's the tread pattern for the T1-R:
