My S2 Exige needs a gearbox rebuild.
I was semi expecting it as I put it into my local Lotus specialist with a dodgy 3rd gear.
So, the gearbox is out and going to be rebuilt. What sort of price will I be looking at for this work?

Thank you
Ben

While it is out get it upgraded.

Get a 4th syncro for 3rd. They are the same size just different material and cost only afew £ more.

If you want to track it or get more power in the future consider Jubu 3rd and fourth and an oil cooler.

Put better oil in it. Redline MT90 as a minimum.

Blimey!!

I've been worrying about the implications of this now I've had a bit of a power upgrade.

Can I ask OP what power his car has & what he thinks caused the failure?

Cheers

Hi there. Car is standard 190 bhp S2 Toyota engine. No mods.

And are you telling me it's going to cost me £3000 to sort my gearbox out. Or is that with a Quafe LSD.

Lol .. don't panic just yet ..
With a standard 190 car you don't really need a quaife or jubu gears and deffo not an oil cooler kit.
If you have aspirations for 300 odd HP then the above is a pre-requisite..
The Syncro issue is not power related however and is just a byproduct of this particular Gearbox .
I think 10 hours labour is the norm for removal and refit of the box plus around 400 quid + parts to refresh the box ... Seals ,Syncro,s bearings etc.
You CAN just fit a 2nd hand Celica box from a breaker however ,albeit with a slightly different ratio for cost of around 200 quid..

Ok. Just spoken to my specialist.
Gearbox is costing me £730 + vat. Then labour to fit it.
Apparently it was f&@£ed.
Technical term. Lots of new internals needed and it was a miracle the car still had forwards propulsion.
Oh well, my slush fund for mods has emptied a little.
At least the car will be back with me good to go with a guarantee and warranty on the gearbox.

The joys of motoring.

How many miles had the gearbox had put through it ?
How old is the car in general ?
Has it been tracked ?

Sorry for the Qs, but I am waiting for mine to go and curious as to what point it might

Beginning to worry now.

Is it a case of when & not if for the uprated cars?

Ok,
25000 miles put through gbox
Car is a 54 plate.
Yes a couple of times by previous owners.

Gbox specialist said it looked like it had run dry of oil at some point in it's life so not a fault of the gearbox itself.
Previous owners faults.......... Brilliant.
The only symptom I had was it was notch going into 3rd. A bit like the synchro was getting tired.

I don't think you have any worries just give your gbox an oil change every now and again.

Gutted but hey ho.

Sounds advice that I'll be acting on in the near future.

The new cars are like that. Design fault along the line somewhere.

You need to ask the garage and you should have done it before they started work. Now it doesnt matter what anyone on here says - you have to pay what they bill you.

Thanks for that.
I was merely asking for an idea on the price.

3rd gear crunch is very common, pretty much all 2ZZ powered elise/exiges do it.

I highly doubt the gearbox is anywhere near as bad as the garage is making out...

I have had 2 Exiges prior to this and neither of those did it.
In fact the gear change is a big factor in why I love these cars.
Anyway, at least it won't be a worry when it's all done.
