Hi all. Still exploring my new '06 111r. All going well but I'm finding putting it into 3rd gear as I change down and sometimes up does not feel meshed correctly. I thought it was me being lazy with the clutch, but no, it's not right.

Please someone tell me it just needs a little adjustment on the next service...holds breath.

My 07 111R sometimes does the same thing so hopefully its 'normal'. These cars certainly have a lot of quirks

Thing is at times there's a near crunch as it goes into 3rd frown Not a quirk...or is it? smile

3rd and 4th are known to be a little weak on the C64 box, might be worth a read: http://wiki.seloc.org/a/Toyota_Gearboxes#Known_Iss...

Notchiness going into third gear was a common complaint with new cars on the 6 speed box. Mine had it for the first 4000 miles but after a visit to the dealer and a moan at the Lotus tec rep, they put in some other gearbox oil and the problem went. It's not a broken gearbox if thats your worry. Its just a characteristic probably coming from the box being at or over its designed power limit

I've a feeling it's not been driven that hard by the two previous owners. I took it for a hard drive yesterday and it seemed better to be fair.

I'll update as I go. Thanks for the link. Will look now.

Mine does this too, 2nd to 3rd but only when cold.
Going to try some MT90 gearbox oil, might help.

Interesting. Found some on here: http://www.demon-tweeks.co.uk/performance/gear-oil...

How easy is it to change yourself? (willing to have a go, but don't know where to start!).

Getting mine done in a few months times, along with general service.
From what I've read there seems to be two items to help cure or lesson this issue.

Engine moving too much under load & gearbox oil.
1. Install engine mount inserts, to help stiffen the mounts.
2. Change gearbox oil.

On my list too then smile

Will you supply the parts or just ask the service guys to do it? I see you need 3 ltrs of the oil making it about £48.00.

THREAD RESURRECTION!

I'm the OP and the car was dropped off for its service with Paul Matty's today. It has become a bit worse with 3rd gear engagement. It is only when cold, but the colder it is the worse it sounds, and when it crunches it sounds bloody awful. I never did do engine mounts as I fear for the cabin rumble when standing still.

I shall see what they say when they take it for a drive from cold on Monday I expect.

I am anxious that I'm looking at a rebuild for something expensive like that? If new oil sorts it then great tbh.

Any fresh thoughts on this. Somebody tell me it'll be fine ! wink

I have a 07 R and there is no issue with gear change, however I believe the engine mounts help the change. I'm some fitted in the spring

Gearbox oil change is in the big service. Mine was never particularly bad pre-service, 3rd always a bit stiff on track days. Since the oil was changed it's been fine. This is on an '06 111R.

Thanks, mine is an '06 111r also. When cold mine crunches horribly, was yours ever that bad and then cured by new oil?

Thank you for that link. I think I'll call service guys tomorrow and offer this up as suggested 1st step.

Hi,
07 R owner here. One gear used to crunch during very cold weather. Haven't noticed it recently. It was fine as soon as the engine had warmed up a bit. Haven't done anything about it. I did fit stiffer engine mounts a while back. This was due to difficulty in engaging second when braking hard approaching a roundabout or similar...engine movement caused this. My latest issue is that my gear-change cables have perished and need to be replaced...some resistance in the gear change.

I've found similar with my car (an '08 SC but same gearbox as the 111r) - 3rd was always the 'toughest' to get into but more when downshifting (like you found) than up.

The problem either got better or I got used to it but it was never a full on crunch (more just tricky to get into when quick changing).

I've not tried changing the gear box oil but if it got worse then thats the first I would do before engine mounts.

I think its the weakest part of the car really -the gearbox that is on yota cars. A shame really !

Best of luck getting it resolved and please do post up on here as others may benefit / or provide some advice!!
