97 S1 started to stink of petrol fumes

My 97 S1 has recently started to stink of petrol (once running). It's recently been into a dealer for another reason, and I had them investigate the problem - they claimed not to be able to find anything amiss.
I was wondering whether a dead lambda sensor would account for this behaviour?
I was also thinking that disconnecting the battery for a while to reset the MEMS to factory defaults might be worth trying.
Anybody had any similar experiences?
(It has had the fuel-filler recall related work done on it)
