Hi all. This feels like a confessional wink

I've been driving my S2 less and less of late, and after a drive out on Sunday I started to wonder of it might be time to let it go and put the money in the bank for a time or to either place it on my main daily driver, or to buy something else later on. I'm having a few Cayman S thoughts, but I'll need to save for the difference.

Aaaanyway. Is there a 'best' time to sell it? Maybe hang on to the spring? ...or now?

Your thoughts are appreciated.

Thank you.

Demand tends to pick up in the Spring so probably easier to sell then. No good having a car on the market for a long time as people will begin to wonder what's wrong with it.

I would say anytime!

I have found that the values for these cars don't differ through out the year, where as MGF, MX5 etc do.

So put it on the market now. Likewise when you look for a porker, you will find that the prices are no different now than in the start of spring.

Thank you both. On balance I'll probably hang on until the spring, as a service is impending.

Thanks.

Anytime really. You could (could you?) keep the Elise for a bit longer and wait for the Cayman prices to fall further btw...

Cayman S prices are definitely falling faster than 111S Elise ones at the moment, so from a purely financial perspective, the longer you leave it the better, I suppose.

Best time to sell an open car is the first sunny day of spring. Worst time is November, dark cold and when everyone is thinking of the cost of Xmas. Same with bikes and same with boats.

Honestly. you'll get into that Caymenne, and you will think, what the beep have I done. The extra weight, and inertia, of those types of cars, Z4, S2000 etc, will dull every driving sense you ever had in an Elise. And half the mpg.

It'll be a lovely place to be, just like a comfy Tin top.

And that's yer answer.

Thankfully I have both. Smug mode on!!!!!

I've always felt that while the Autumn season typically has less convertibles on the market & less punters looking to buy - the sticker price doesn't take any additional hit. As commented above, it may take longer to sell than in the summer but you won't be removing the shirt from your back.

In your case I would (unfortunately) advise to sell now.
Your driving the car less and less, this will likely only decrease further over the next few months while a service will need to be paid for, insurance & possibly tax & MOT.
Sell now, bank the cash, use the savings from no running costs over the next few months & then cash in on the additional depreciation of the CaymanS in early Spring.

Or keep it & fall in love with it again next year!

Not an easy decision in any way this! I've been working on a Masters this year and am currently writing it up so that has had a big hit on the ownership experience. No track days or any such fun! It'll all be behind me come December, so I am quietly hoping that I do fall back in love with it come the spring.

I also think that naturally a Cayman would be more to run and wonder if I'm getting a bit of grass is greener syndrome. I've have Porsche yearnings for over 20 years now you see wink

Lol. Seems I've talked myself round in a circle.

Thanks all for the input.

Thanks for that. I also have wondered in the past if moving up from the 111s 1.8K series to a supercharged model would satisfy my desire for more hard line push for overtakes? also to move away from the rattles I experience. I would also love air con as the heat soak in summer nearly kills me.

So which would you keep based on driving experience alone if you had to decide here and now?

Thanks!

I had both too. Bought CaymanS intending to move Elise on but didn't. After 2 years I sold the Cayman and still have my Elise

Thanks Paul, is that a financed-based decision or a driving quality thing?

Driving. The porsche is in all measurable things the better car. But the Elise rewards more and was the 'go to' car when I 'went for a drive'

I've read such glowing reports of the Cayman that I assumed it was better in All ways.

Thanks again Paul.
