The dreaded MIL light

Can anyone assist? I have a 2003 Elise K series, and the problem is as follows. When you turn the ignition to stage 2 the MIL takes between 5 and 30 seconds to come on (then you can hear fuel pump). Obviously car will not start until this has happend. When started, the car will never idle when cold (combination of hunting and low idle), but seems ok when hot.
Just got back now, and has same starting issues but once started MIL light is on permantly now and car is not running well. No power won't idle etc..
I had it at the local dealer who had it for three days, and could not find anything obvious. Its the only one in country, so they have no experience.
Short of ordering lots of parts from UK, does anyone reccomend things to check first. I am reluctant to take it to normal workshop, so any help would be appreciated.Thanks.
