On trying to start my S1 today, the fuse was blowing as soon as you turn the key to put the ignition on (it has a starter button so you never even get to turn the engine over)

Last week it was in the garage to be looked at as it did it a fortnight ago. They put a new alternator on and re-wired the fuel pump fuse and wiring at the back as it seems that the car had some work done in the past. They could never get the fuse to blow. It was fine after this and was ok to drive back.

On a whim I unplugged the 20amp fuse for the fuel pump and was able to turn the ignition on and off without any issues. I reconnected it and the car starts fine without issues. It seems that the issue only happens if the car has been left for more than a few days.

Any ideas what could be causing this?

what age of car is it? (pre/post 97?)

and do you mean the big Maxi-fuse is blowing?

Its a 2000 S1
These are the normal sized fuses in the front and the normal sized 20amp in the back.
It blew again after tea when I tried to start it. Run out of fuses now smile

can't think of any correlation between the two?

fuel pump fuse is not connected to the ignition (fused) in any way?

only place they go near each other is at the immobiliser relay box next to the ECU, so I guess it's possible somebody has done a bit of a bodge around there (all the wires are black)...

Fuel fuse could be a red herring then. What is on ignition services that could have a intermittent fault?

all it does is:

1) dash
2) radio
3) fan relay
4) imobiliser
5) headlight switch

I have a ecliptech rev light fitted for a year to the dash. I'll disconnect it to see if that's causing it.
Could it be the fan on its way out?

Took 4 fuses to start working today. Left the ignition on so I could listen to the radio.
On slamming close the passenger door after 10 minutes, the fuse blew.

Hi everyone,

Sorry to dig out such an old topic, but I'm basically having the same issue for over a month now ('99 S1). First appeared out of nothing while shifting to second gear in traffic. After that, I was able to start the car after a few min again, but it died when trying to put in reverse right after. Since then, the ignition service fuse keeps blowing.
Checked a few things so far (car is stranded and currently at a friend's place around 45min from my house, so access it limited at the moment), but didn't manage to track down the cause so far.

What was the cause in your case?

Thanks in advance!

Best regards from Germany,
Marco

It was something to do with the fuel pump and system if I remember correctly.

I've got the same problem just started with my S2 111S (2005).

Running well - immediately after a C+Cambelt service - crawling in traffic, cut out.
Ignition switch did nothing.
Found the 10A ignition services fuse blown, replaced, and dash lights came on, car started, ran for a few seconds, and blew the fuse.

My fan has been dead for a while, but is in the Max-3 on position, I remember.
Could a kn@ckered fan be drawing the excess power?
ALl help appreciated (I'm the limits of my technical 'skills' ;0)
