Mainly about noise
Discussion
In the Elise V Europa thread, mention was made of cabin noise. Is this mainly tyre noise, engine noise or wind noise?
I know what chronic wind noise is like - anybody who's had an MGBGT will understand. And most modern cars have tyre noise, but which is most noticeable with an Elise, and is it quieter with the roof off?
About the soft top - how long does it take to fit? Is it a five minute side of the road job or does it take longer?
Thanks.

Maily engine noise if your driving it properly. GROWL
But yup lots of tyre noise, and wind noise, and creaks in the chasis, gearbox clunking into place, suspension parts, you hear everything
Quieter with roof off?? Perhaps at moderate speeds. But anything over 60, wind, anything over 85 NOISEY WIND!
It all adds up to alovely symphony of noise. Best part of owning an Elise.
Soft top is a 1 minute job to put on, and 30 secs to take off on an S2, 3 minutes with an allen key on an S1.

Most standard Elises have fairly quiet engines, and you therefore hear more background noise - road, tyres, airflow, transmission, suspension....
These are not particularly noticeable, but really you want to hear the engine/exhaust note. It's for this reason that most people opt for a good sports exhaust and induction system.
The best of these systems provide a nice purposeful tone that overrides most other noises without being too intrusive or tiresome in the cabin. They should also improve mid-range performance.
Personally, I'd recommend the Lotus TRD air box and one of the 2bular exhaust systems (ideally with the sports catalyst and 4-2-1 manifold for the full performance benefits).

Thanks for your thoughts on this. As a Morgan owner I'm familiar with.....
Quote "lots of tyre noise, and wind noise, and creaks in the chasis, gearbox clunking into place, suspension parts, you hear everything"
And.....
"Its so raw compared to normal cars it's more like a kit car than a production car."
I like my cars raw, but would like something a bit more refined and practical when needed - like when the weather is unpredictable. You may find it amusing that I'm looking at the Elise in those terms, but a Morgan defines raw at every level. The trouble with the Morgan hood is that even the 'easy up' hood takes over five minutes, and longer with the hood cover in place. I'm in love with the Europa shape, but go everywhere with the hood down, so it's hard to contemplate a permanent hardtop, even with more refinement and a bigger boot. Anyway I won't be looking seriously for a while yet, but the Elise remains a front runner.

You can get a hard top for the Elise for those colder/wetter months. In the summer take it off leave it in the garage and use the soft top.RedMorgan said:
Does the Elsie Type 25 Limited Edition come with a soft top? I've only seen them with the hardtop in place, and of the two advertised now, no mention of the soft top.
Just googled it http://www.elises.co.uk/models/s2/25/index.htmlAparently the Type 25 was supplied with both hard top, maintaining the twin stripes, and soft top as standard. Which is unusual as usually the hard top is an optional extra.
