S1 Numberplate Options
Discussion
I have a very steep entrance to my driveway, which my S1 clears by a hair's breadth with no plate on. With the plate on the standard plastic mount thing, it knackered the bottom half of the plate in no time at all.
In the meantime I have been pootling around with a stick-on plate, but it's recently come to my attention that it looks gash. Every S1 I've seen has a different solution, but what is the definitive one? Ideally I'd like it to use the original mounting holes for the large plastic holder, but carry a smaller/thinner plate, or one a bit higher up, but would that get in the way of the intake?
What do you run on your S1, and why?

I have a normal sized plate velcroed to the plastic number plate carrier.
I have it positioned so that the plate is sticking down just below the lip of the clam so that it's the lowest point on the front and hence a warning of impending grounding.
On very rare occasions it gets knocked off if I don't get a good lock on when backing out of the drive, but if it does I just pop it back on.
The velcro holds the plate on very tightly, but will come undone if put under too much pressure, so it stops the plate and number plate carrier/clam from taking too much stress if it catches.
Because of the width of the velcro strips I can move the plate up or down a few centimetres, to give it more clearance if necessary, but like I say, I like the fact that as the lowest point on the front it warns me if the nose is getting close to the ground and I know that no damage will be done if it does catch a little.
I don't think having the plate positioned a half inch higher would do much to reduce the airflow to the rad to be honest, but might not look as good.
I'd say it's the best method of attaching the plate if you stay with a full sized one. If you had the plate attached like this you could even just pull it off when parking and stick it back on when leaving home.

Some people do.
Doesn't really suit the car, it's from a different era!
Mine's another held on by heavy duty velcro. It used to get ripped out quite a bit where I parked, and was concerned about the clam. Now it doesn't matter - just stick it on again!
Doesn't fall off and passed its MOT, even though it's on a slightly dubious downwards angle
