I have this mate up the road with an Elise which does what it says on the tin (LOTUS) from time to time.
On Sunday when he tried to take it out it refused to start - engine turn but it wouldnt fire. We already replaced the immobiliser relay box a while back so it might be thatagain . Having read a few forums and mugs of tea with it switched off and gazing under the lid we tapped the IACV a few times with the back end of a hammer.
On the next turn of the key the engine fired straightaway but hunted from 1200 to 1500 rpm. Switched the engine off to have a look under the lid again but nothing obvious. Started it again and everything was fine.
Is this a sign that the IACV is next on the shopping list or a typical Lotus gremlin?

I'm no expert but possibly you are barking up the right tree there.
I had some fun with irratic idle on my Sport 160 (even more than the norm ). It is possible (and very easy) to remove the IACV and give it a clean and lube with silicone spray. They can tend to get a bit coked up I believe, although the one time I did this it was spotless and did not work any better with lubrication. Still worth a try as a starter!
That IACV was just knackered. So shortly later I had another fitted. Wasn't brand new but worked (initially!). After a while I started to get problems again. Either wouldn't idle from cold but would once warm (so no biggy), or would start to idle high once warmed up (not so clever and made it run poorly). Both could sometimes be resolved by doing the Throttle Position Sensor (TPS) reset as described in the manual but not always.
In the end I fitted a brand new IACV and all was fine, so I think that second one was temperamental.
