hi guys,

I'm struggling to get a permanent fix to an issue i'm having with the with the roof brackets on my S1 Elise.

In a nut shell, i took off one of the brackets you clip the back of the roof bars into on '96 Elise and the nut which the bolt goes into (which should be welded into place apparently) dissappeared down into the belly of the car.

I've tried bodging it with liquid metal etc but it's just not strong enough.

Ultimatly i need to get access to the back of the rollover bar to put a new nut on...This however appears difficult to get access to as you can't even get to it if you remove the rear clam as it appears to be behind the firewall/bulkhead.

Any ideas how I can do this? I'm close to loosing my mind!

I'm not sure if I'm following this. Do you mean the clips that the cantrail clips onto? i.e. these bits? (appreciate these are upgrade, but you know what I mean?)

I wouldn't have thought the nuts would be welded on, how can you get a welding gun up a long tube? I would think they are rivnuts or something similar. Unless of course they are welded in before the back stay is welded on?

It is the side sills that needs to be accessed I think (looking out of the window at my car), so maybe a rivnut might fix the issue?

if your on about the fixing for the cant rail slug onto the top of the roll-hop then your stuffed.

only way to get at the back of this is to remove the real clam (easy enough) and then the sill part that covers the sides of the roll-hop.

easiest solution is to drill it out and use a steel flush riv-nut from the front, but consider that the gap between the fixing plate and the hop is not great, you may well have to cut-down the riv-nut first.

After googling rivet nut... that's exactly what i need. thanks so much!

It's such a f**king stupid problem to have.

appreciate your help - not i've got to get my hands on a rivet nut gun or whatever i need!
