Hi All,

My MIL warning light has come on (solid) and I would like to be able to read it myself before I head to a garage. Will either of the two readers below work with my 2002 Lotus Elise Sports Tourer? I've not done anything like this before - I can't do any harm by plugging a reader in? Do they just read the code and give you the option to cancel them and turn off the light?

In case anyone is wondering why I want to read it myself, there was a very brief grumble when the engine started but otherwise everything seems fine - through necessity I had to drive it a couple of hundred miles with the light on... don't ask I just had to, and I can't see that there is any problem. I want to try and clear the code myself and see if it comes back on - rather than pay a garage ££.

Thanks.

Neither link works for me.

ETA: Ah that's because the target of the link is wrong but the text is right. They should both work, assuming an 02 car is the same as my 04 one.

I updated the links, thanks. 04 would be a Toyota engine, where as mine is a K-Series engine... not sure if the ECU is different though.

Can I do any harm by plugging one of these in?

I have an Autel Maxiscan reader, different model to that on your link, but it plugs in and reads both Toyota engined and K series cars OK. Not sure if you plan of resetting/clearing the codes though - haven't meddled around with that side of things yet as haven't needed to.

No, my car is K-series, albeit a VVC.

AFAIK K-Series is CANBUS and not OBDII. so an OBDII reader wouldn't do you any good.

I thought OBDx was a protocol over the CANBUS transport layer?

I took my Rover engined 53 plate Elise to my local Britannia tyres when my light came on and they gave me the number (it was a problem with the sensor on the rear brake). Didn't charge me a penny. It might be worth a try to save some pennies!
