I am starting to tire of a problem with my S1's engine so thought I would see if any of you had experienced anything like this before...

Its an intermittent problem where the engine revs don't drop back to idle correctly. The occurrence and type of problems vary but all seem related to the same fault:

1. When starting the engine the revs sit anywhere between 1500-3000rpm and refuse to drop any lower... if you stop and restart the engine this sometimes clears this or it sometimes just disappears after a short drive... sometimes not at all!
2. When the abnormal idle occurs and you blip the throttle to say 4000 the revs drop back down really slowly... this is also very noticeable when accelerating and then changing gear as the revs just seem to stay the same even though your foot is off the throttle!
3. Sat at traffic lights the revs just fluctuate from idle up to 1500 at random
4. Other times when sat in traffic the revs just start to climb steadily until they hit 3000 and just stick there!

The outside and engine temperature's seem to have no affect on this fault. I have also checked that the throttle cable is not sticking by manually ensuring the throttle body is fully closed! Is this some kind of electronic glitch (ECU or associated sensors) because it only started about 6 weeks ago and the car has only done 16k miles?

Many thanks!

Ben

Sounds like the Idle Air Control Valve may be at fault here. I'm no expert myself but if you've checked the throttle cable is letting the throttle body close OK then it sounds like air is finding it's way in elsewhere.

Good luck,

Bonce.

Two things you can try (not my words, ripped from another forum):

=======================

The IACV is the black cylinder thing between the injection system and the engine head. It has a plug coming out of the top of it (when you look at the engine this rambling will make sense :-) Anyway you will need a torx driver and some carb cleaner. Remove the plug from the top, undo the torx screws and pull the IACV out take the carb cleaner and clean the bottom of the IACV (brass end, looks like a bullet) pull back the plastic cover that butts up against the "bullet" and squirt carb cleaner in there. Then squirt carb cleaner into the hole where the IAVC came out of and clean the inside of there as well using a piece of soft cloth (make sure there aren't bits falling off the cloth). When done put it all back together and see if it starts. Do a IACV reset before starting the car i.e turn ignition on pump throttle 5 times then start the engine.

=======================

You can also try and reset the IACV. To do this

1. Turn the key to the second click so the dash lights come on.
2. Press and release the accelerator 5 times.
3. Turn of the ignition.
4. Wait a few seconds and then start the car.

Thanks for all the suggestions thus far. I already had the alu body fitted about 6 months ago but the IACV comments are very interesting.

I stripped the IACV down and cleaned as instructed and this did make a bit of a difference but didnt cure the problem.

This has got to be related though because I can clear the problem every time by following the IACV reset procedure! Probally need to try replacing this next?...

Thanks

Ben
