Not sure what it's called but it's part of the disc that doesn't have pad contact.

Mine are getting a bit rusty and unsightly so was wondering if I can spray them silver/grey without affecting the disc/pad operation?

(Mods -i've also posted this in the Brakes & Suspension forum but it looks a bit tumbleweed in there)

They tend to go rusty there. Painting it shouldnt cause any problems.

When I bought mine, I had the dealer paint them black before collection (no cost) - they stayed rust free for the 3 years I owned it and no problems - in fact, when I switched to Pagid blues, they had a slightly smaller swept area, the unused bit then went rusty and stayed that way, but eventually went dark, I assume due to dust build up?

normal on most cars...the place that services my car sprays them with silver hammerite as part of service...lasts for the life of the disks

Just been looking at my off-side front disc - all the holes are packed full of pad dust to the degree that you can't feel the holes.
The disc itself has ridges right across it - not sharp like scoring but smooth bumpy ridges.
I've also noticed that the wheel is always way dustier than the other 3.

The disc has also got the lipped edge indicating it's wearing out - the other front one or indeed the rear ones have no sign of wear (only done 2400 miles).

I'm guessing a stuck/seized piston (AP 4 pots)?

Suppose I need to go back to the dealer again (following a rattly drivers window and inoperable passenger window... rolleyes )

Alloy belled disc would be the best solution, I ran AP295mm ones witht he Elise parts spacers and it improve braking significantly as well on track.

Ultimax from EBC on mine and they are pre painted. So far no rust there after 2 years.

On the other side these cars are made to be driven.

WTF has that got to do with NOT wanting rusty discs?
Perhaps you weren't bothered if your car looked st but some of us actually have high standard.

Christ, does that mean it's wrong for me to be annoyed that the sea air has turned my front tow eye strut on my 2008 Exige all rusty in the 8 months I've had it?

Yes they're built to be used but there's nothing wrong with trying to keep things looking smart. Personally, I wouldn't go so far as to paint my discs but that's me. I totally understand the OP's desire to do so with his new pride and joy.
