Are there any differences between the Essex engine for auto & manual? Main thing that comes to mind is the crank, is that different? Can you bolt the manual flywheel on instead of the torque convertor?

Wanting to build up a spare engine for my SE5a so I can keep the car on the road in the meantime. Seen a couple of auto units knocking about so wondered what my options are!

In a similar vein are there any differences between the engines for Reliant and other applications? Seen an old Transit cheap and wondered if that was do-able...

The only difference that I know of is the spigot bearing at the end of the crank is a different size so you would have to remove it and replace with the other type. Yes you can bolt the manual flywheel on inplace of the Torque Converter.

To remove the spigot bearing fill the hole with grease and then, using a drift the same size as the hole in the bearing, plave the drift in the hole and hit with a hammer this will force the bearing out. When putting in the new one make sure it is square when it goes in otherwise it will jam.

I'm pretty sure Transits had low compression engines

"I'm pretty sure Transits had low compression engines"

And .. make sure it isn't a 2.5L not a 3.0L - indistinguishable from the outside.
