I've recently acquired an SE6a Auto.
Can you clear up these questions:
(1) Is the three speed Ford auto box a Borg Warner type 35?

(2) What is the difference between this and a Borg Warner TH350?

(3) What is the power & torque capacity of the type 35?

(4) Is it relatively easy to d.i.y rebuild / overhaul the type 35. When it's cold, it won't go into reverse. It has been stood for several years but has been on the road and running for the last two and has been displaying this problem during this time. Now it's mine, I want to sort it!

(5) Has anybody converted an auto to manual? If so, which gearbox would you recommend (a scim 4 speed + O.D or a type 9)? What about the pedal box - what did it come off when you converted? Hydraulic or cable clutch release?

(6) Has anybody fitted turbo/s to the Essex V6? Is it good? What else is required to make it work?

OK; all for now. Plenty of ideas rolling around the "grey cells".
Cheers

No Its a Ford C3 Auto Gear Box. Borg Warner 35 was used on the SE5

Yes this used to be a common conversion. Most people use a Type 9 these days. Most if not all conversions use the pedal box from a manual Scimitar. There are quite a few scrappers around these days. If you email me through my profile I can give you the number of a chap who has a couple of pedal boxes available.

Yes this has been done. To find out what is involved your best bet is to speak to David McLachlan of Highpeak Classics www.hpcas.co.uk as he has worked on turbo conversions.

Thanks for that.
The only reason I'm considering swapping to a manual is I intend to sprint with it and have heard nowt but bad about auto boxes for "speed" usage. I've also been warned off them because they're aparently very complicated, BUT it's already in the car, so no messing about with cutting footwells to fit pedal boxes, no modified propshafts etc and I like driving with it.
Incidentally, the conversion has to be a gearbox that was fitted to that model during its production - the type 9 wasn't hence 4 speed + o.d idea.

ford is ford and borg-warner is borg-warner.

before i would convert it, i would buy a manual car!!!

for the reverse-problem: did you change the oil? is the gear-selector adjusted properly? are the engine-mounts ok (i had a scimitar where 1 engine mount was broken, so the complete engine-gearbox wasnt well aligned inside the car, the gear selector touched the body and at the end the damaged engine-mount was the reason of the wrong gear-change)

overhaul of an automatic-gearbox must be done by a specialist---never do yourself. but i think you will get a good 2nd hand one on the market.
