They are classed as a production car as they were never offered in kit form. Not suprising really as they were aimed at the executive market. I very much doubt Princess Anne would have been seen dead in a kit car.

You can insure them as classic cars,

Kit cars originally were production cars boxed and sent out in kit form for assembly by the purchaser. This avoided purchase tax simple sports cars like Lotus and Elva’s were the most popular.

Reliant were a low volume car manufacture who built cars as diverse as the Reliant Ant and the Ford RS 200 rally car – ill put my anorak away now!

If you are going to buy one find a pre 73 as its tax exempt, but that assumes you like the early cars??? They are quite robust if they are well looked after. The bodies can be really expensive to put right so avoid any thing with a crazing.

The chassis is relativly easy to check but there are a few bits that you cant see. if there is any crazing over the corner of the front arches the front cross member has probably gone but this is easy to repalce, just bolts in. it there is any around the door hinges the steel that is bound into the body has gone - completly in some cases - nightmare to replace on 5's easier on 6's as its bolted to the chassis. Bulging around the rear bumper means the rear cross member is corroding.
