I've gone and done it now
Discussion
After a sudden rush of blood to the head I'm now the proud owner of a 1977 SE6a. The engine and gearbox seem pretty good. Chassis seems solid. Brakes were a bit spongy but seem better after a bleed through, still not great but that could be because I'm used to more modern cars. Did notice the outer edge of the disc has a chamfer which seems odd, I'm more used to there being a bit of a lip going the other way.
My biggest problem is small electrical issues. The drivers sidelight doesn't work. Tested with the meter and the earth wire is fine, unfortunately the 12v wire goes to earth too. The passenger side tests out as you'd expect, earth and nothing when off and then earth and 12v when on. I plan to run a wire across from the passenger sidelight to get a supply for the driver's side.
The passenger side inner lamp appears shot so I've ordered a replacement. Considering going for halogen replacements for the lot. Anybody done that? Thought of rewiring the inner lamps as side lights and having halogen dip and main beam on the 7" units similar to my MK1 Eunos. Would the inner lamps be too bright to pass as side lights?
The rear lights are completely random, some work, some don't, some work for a bit then stop. The old bulb holders are corroded and making poor contact into the body. I've ordered a modern replacement based on advice on the owners club website. Hopefully a better weather seal and fixed bulb holders accessed from the outside will make life easier.
Any tips and advice gratefully received. Plans at the moment are limited to turning it into a (semi)reliable runner. The future may involve performance mods as I gain confidence and learn one end of a spanner from the other.
