Oil issue Saab 9-5 Aero 2002
Discussion
Hello,
Ive recently had the sump dropped, strainer and pipe cleaned and sump "desludged".The mechanic put in Semi-Synthetic oil as he stated an older engine (172000 miles in my case)would run better on it than fully synth. Is this true as most info suggests only Fully synth should be used in Aero's.Would be grateful for any info.

Just go Mobil 1 then you don't have worry, nor research debate or argue the point ever again.
Haha. Have you been posting elsewhere on this forum? As for the OP's original question - according to the forums you really should be putting in Fully-Synthetic.
For an engine with higher miles, i.e yours, you should go for 5w-40 Fully Synthetic as it will help your engine run quieter and smoother. Failing that, go for 5w-30 Fully Synthetic.
Mine is currently running 5w-30 and at it's next change - in about 4 months, I will switch to 5w-40.
So, if I was you I'd get a new filter and some fully synthetic in it. It doesn't really matter whether it's an Aero or not. The only difference was that the Aeros were ran on Fully Synthetic from the factory so didn't suffer as badly from the blocked strainer.
Hope that helps.
It does matter that it's an Aero. Higher performance, bigger turbo / BHP etc generate more heat - more so given Aero's get driven harder. Mobil 1 has a higher tolerance to heat fail than probably any other readily available oil, and heat is the ultimate killer of all oils.
Just a heads up

I was just meaning that you should use fully synthetic whether it's an Aero or not.Just a heads up

You're absolutely right, not that I'm an expert, but I do agree with you. If I had my way I would ban semi synthetics. Snake oil to make money. Even worse that the motor industry recommends the stuff in support of oil companies.
That said, the market is saturated by cheap fully synths now which are little if any better than high end multigrades. Trying to work out which is best is not as simple as it should be. It's made worse by the factors stocking what they can make better profit on, which usually comes down to one or two brands, neither of which are right (or as good as required) for the vehicle.
