9-3 TTiD 180BHP MPG
Discussion
Can anyone confirm the MPG from a 180BHP TTiD 9-3 sports wagon, and if Vector Sport or Aero make a difference.
The Saab web site says 61.4 combined for a Vector Sport, yet for an Aero it quotes 55.4, and the CO2 emmissions are different.
If different, how, with the same BHP?
Any help appreciated.

Primarily 18 miles each way to and from work. Mainly quiet B- roads but with long straights and some A-roads. I tried driving with and without the cruise control. I've also tried some M-way work - with no difference. I've used gentle throttle applications, tried not to use the brakes and not exceeded 50 mph. Sadly, I can't get near to 50 mpg - never mind exceed it! What is certain is that, if I do the same commute at 60 mph - or thereabouts, the average consumption drops markedly to just under 40 mpg at best.
Been to see the car today, and now understand a little bit more.
Not all 180BHP engines are the same. Saab over the last few years have been continually reducing the CO2 emmissions, and increasing the MPG, therefore the newer the car, the lower the CO2, and more MPG you get for your money.
The one I am looking at is an 09 plate so the combined figure is quoted as 48mpg, where a later 59 plate (2010 model) would return 55 MPG.

Definitely more economic with the aircon off. Makes a difference to my Tid of 3-4mpg.
FWIW, I commute Oxford-LHR, mornings M40 med/heavy traffic (ie all lanes in use steady - erm - mph) nights nearly empty roads. Get average according to the putor 44-46; actual with calculating on fill-ups 43-45 depending on my right foot. Max .8+ leptons. Quite happy with that; towing gives us ~34-36 which aint bad at all.
Would love either a TTid or tune mine (merely for more towing grunt under 2k RPM as the legal limit is around the start of the power band!) but MPG may suffer.

I'm running the 2006 version, and seeing the same sort of figures, despite a 30bhp deficit over yours. Official figures are way off... round town high 30's, low 40's are attainable. Motorway, an hours run will see 50mpg as a high, 45mpg as a safe bet. A/C on or off, makes no difference.
Was told that the engines in SAAB (then and now) when diesel are the same as the Alfa/Fiat JTD lump, and same as the Vauxhall CDTI variant.... BUT pulling heavier cars, so figures lower.

Took the plunge and purchased an 09 TTid AERO sportswagon.
Done about 550 miles since collecting last Monday, and the computer is saying 46.2mpg, so yes, just over 2 mpg down on stated figures, but still very respectable I feel given the performance.
I did test drive a 1.6 V50 Volvo which claimed in excess of 60 mpg, but with 0-60 of about 3 days, the high mpg was too much of a trade off for performance / driving enjoyment.
Have kept receipts since purchase, so will calculate the mpg and report back in a couple of thousand miles.
Very impressed with the performance / torque of the engine.

Lost a fortune by buying a brand new 9-5 3.0 TiD in 04. Will never buy new again, always buy a 2 - 3 year old low milage which has already taken a big hit on the depreciation!
I couldn't find many to choose from, quite a few 12 month old examples, but a little more than I wanted to pay, but managed to find a mint 09 with 20k on the clock.
