I bought a nice looking Saab 9-3 2.0 SE last week from what I thought was a private seller, but turned out to be a "dabbler" in the trade, doing a few cars now and again to earn a few bucks. He told me the Saab came as a part ex for a BMW he sold. Didn't think anymore about it at the time, but a week later, I found oil leaks, and the Aircon compressor has died. I've been told to expect a bill of around £700!!. Anyone know if there is comeback on the "trader" after a couple of weeks.

Sale of goods act, I think?

deeming it unfit for purpose or not fit for it?

I'd be inclined intitially to nip round and say look laddo do you want to either give me the cash back or sort this out pronto. If you get st then report him to trading standards and the local council. That would then make his life a little uncomfy if he was tradding and not declairing it.

The problem is with any 'second hand' item at the end of the day it's just that second hand and in 99% of cases 'Sold as seen' So really I'm not sure how much you'll be able to get out of him. How much did you pay? Book price higher/lower? Cash or if on a credit you have a few come backs but if it's cash you may be at a loss. Sorry.

Hi there
I know what you're saying. I'm positive this is just a small time guy earning a bit on the side, and threats of talking to the council or the taxman would make him very twitchy, but I really don't like the thought of turning into a "grass" to get my way. Think I'll just take it on the chin and make the best of it. The car will be grest when it's done, just a bit more expensive than I hoped.
